We have been travelling up to Big Bear Camp for almost ten years now as part of our annual guys fishing trip away. The finishing on Horwood Lake is excellent! Northern Pike and Walleye have always found a way into our boat regardless of conditions or the quality of the fishermen!
The cabins are very well appointed and comfortable. A good selection of couches, single beds, and the screened in porch make our stay a comfortable one. Most of the amenities appear to be garage sale finds from the cutlery and dishes, up to the mixed array of furnishings. Overall pretty comfortable to come back to after a long day in the boats.
Their rental boats are pretty beat up and in dire need of replacement. Given the amount of rocks and floating logs in the lake, it is not a surprise really, but for the amount we pay for the visit, we expect a bit more. There is plenty of room for docking your own boats and the boat launch appears pretty good.
The only downside to Big Bear Camp is the lack of any sort of customer service or feeling that you are welcomed. We have been coming back to this camp for some time and at no time have we ever felt Paul, Angie, or Ashley have ever greeted us as a guest and left us feeling like a friend as their motto implies.
Although the staff have made some attempts and being more friendly following staffing changes to their front desk, they definitely don't get it. A simple, "how's the fishing been?" or "I hear they have been biting on . . . by Marsh Island" would be appreciated. If you do not extend a handshake, don't expect one in return from these owners.
Overall, the fishing on Horwood Lake is excellent! The accommodations are good, and the customer service is needing some improvement. Being said, we are booked to return next year and are looking forward to it!
