We visited on a hot summer day in August. Be sure to bring sunscreen, bug spray (lots of mosquitos during the 10 minute walk through the woods to get to the Fort), water and hats.
Allow 5 hours to visit this site. There is plenty to see and the Fort is alive with actors in period costume. Actors can be found in most if not all of the main buildings, and there are a few performances throughout the day re-enacting conditions at the time. Do not miss "The Arrival" - a re-enactment depicting the arrival of the Voyageurs. Have your video cameras ready for the firing of the cannon (still images don't quite capture the full experience).
This was a fur trading post, and a key part of Canada's early economy. Being offended by the sight of furs here would be akin to a vegan having a nervous breakdown in a steakhouse...
The food service on sight was good to very good, and priced competively.
