I had read about this restaurant before my trip to Stratford so I had to try the number one restaurant in this location. Their main dishes are their hamburgers made several different ways as well as poutine. I have to admit I have never heard of poutine before. "Poutine is a common Canadian dish (originally from Quebec), made with french fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds." as stated in Wikipedia. The menu is on a chalk board up on the right wall as you walk in.
I asked which were the most popular poutine variations and was told the traditional way with brown gravy and cheese curds, Italian (with tomato sauce, olive oil and cheese curds and lastly the black bean version. We decided to try the first two while I liked both I think I do prefer the traditional way the best. I got a basic hamburger. You get a choice of lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup, pickles and mayonnaise. The hamburger was made to my order medium as was very good.
This is a very small establishment so at first I thought we would have to get ours to go but then we got lucky and some seats freed up at the long table with bar type stools. It is the only table in the place so you sit by others. The person behind the counter was very helpful with taking our order. The place seemed pretty clean. It is right in the downtown area near other shops and restaurants. Just a street and half away is the river. So you could take your food down there and eat if you want to as there is seating occasionally.
Of all the places I ate here this was my favorite. Please note they only take cash. They will except U.S. dollars too. There is a parking lot diagonal from the place which I think was .40 cents an hour. There is street parking if you are lucky enough to get one with a meter. Afterwards you could stroll around the shops or walk down to the river and close by is a lovely flower garden by the court house on Huron St called Shakespearean Gardens.
