Allium is great part of the new face of culinary excellence in Ottawa. Great service and good food wonderfully paired with great wines. Knowledgeable staff.

“an average lunch experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

I went to Allium recently for lunch with a colleague, mostly because of reviews here. I have to say that it was overall a pleasant experience, but compared to other comments here, we were both underwhelmed.

First - only on street parking, and a one hour limit make it challenging to drive here. Parking restrictions end by 7 pm, so I imagine it would be easier for a dinner.

The venue itself is nice but quite plain. Service was a high point - charming, friendly and efficient. And when my colleague mentioned an allergy, our server was quick to check with the chef and offer alternatives.

I had expected to be wowed by the food, but we both found it unremarkable. It was tasty enough, but plainly presented and did not live up to the imaginative descriptions on the menu. It was full of people who walked over from Tunneys Pasture, so they do a lively lunch time business and if I worked in the area, would give it another try. But given the parking issues, I will likely not return for lunch, but might return for a dinner, to see if it is a different experience and a more interesting food experience.

“oops stick with what you know lesson”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

Wanted to be adventurous so decided on the chef surprise for both the appetizer and main. The squash red pepper soup very good crushed peanuts cilantro cheese shred on top . Not too keen on the "bunny" crochet as visions of rabbits at Easter ...well Raspberry coulis with crimini mushrooms interesting and good Eggplant with pork tenderloin make that tough meat on top could not saw through not good My partner had the flat iron steak and fries and loved it The fries pencil thin tasted of the big truck fries Sooo good . The waiter took away my birthday dinner and i decided time to go . The meat being tough just bad luck .Intersting touches butter tonight was maple chipolte . So go with adventure in mind but some things well stick with what you know . $$ meal and still hungry .

“Allium doesn't disappoint!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

I had dinner at Allium last week and can't wait to go back. The service was excellent. The menu was fantastic and the food was spectacular. Easily one of my favourite eateries in Ottawa. This place is consistent in it's excellence and just never seems to disappoint.

“Delicious food but lacks ambience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Food was excellent and delicious. The plates were presented nicely, but this place definitely lacks ambience. It's like eating gourmet food in a barn like setting. Lacks art work, lighting, table cloths, flowers, music...having a beautiful dish in a barn like table with ikea tea light candles while being burnt under a spot light...it's not worth the price tag. Food is important when eating out, but so is ambience. If I am being charged top dollar, I want to be in a place that feels like top dollar... I can eat top dollar food at home.
