“Great menue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014 via mobile

Very good restaurant. The menue has many choices all with a French twist. We had mussels, steak frites, rabbit, and artic char. Everything was well presented and tasteful. Good service and an upbeat casual atmosphere. The only fault was that the frites were frozen and not fresh cut. No excuse for frozen in a quality bistro.

“Wow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

April 7, 2014

Lunch with sister. Their menue is great.

We had tartar, frissé with eggs and pancetta, cheeze plate, oyster and of course a good wine at $45. The food was fantastic but the price is a bit high.

The waiter Jeffrey is amassing. He really tried to speak French most of the time. He knows is job and he suggest good food.

It was a wow for us!

“Always good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

I have never been disappointed with this place, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. It has a European vibe mixed with a dose of San Francisco. It's one of my favourites in the city.

“Great ambience and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

The Metropolitain is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa and is a frequent haunt of Politicians, lobbyists and various power brokers (of which, we are not one!). It is on the corner of Sussex and Rideau and opens on a wide courtyard that offers good views of the passing tourists and workers in Ottawa.

The mood and food are decidedly European and they carry it off well. Service is friendly and quick. The first time we had lunch there, one of us had a very rich and creamy Lobster Mac and Cheese, and two others had a rich and creamy seafood crepe. All were delicious and paired with a good selection of wines and European beers. Sadly, because of the European focus, there are no Canadian micro-brew beers available, although you can get a bottle of Beau's.

Our last visit was saved from disaster by an excellent server, Allison. Once again, we ordered the seafood crepe. It was described as sea bass with mushrooms and a orange sauce. In fact, it was a very dry mushroom crepe, with a few morsels of fish. We asked for the "sauce" on the side and it came as a butter, which was difficult to spread. I ate mine, since I love mushrooms, but my wife couldn't eat hers. It did come with an excellent squash soup or a half salad/half fries option. I had the soup and then I also ate my wife's fries, which were crispy delicious.

The waitress took the crepe off our bill, as well as comping us a cappuccino and a double espresso, both done to perfection. She also said she would speak with the chef and would stop promoting the dish for the balance of that lunch period. What could have been a bad experience was saved by her response.

Their lunch menu is diverse and includes lamb shank, calf liver, duck confit, fish and chips, a variety of salads and sandwiches.

We will go back.

“Good downtown restaurant close to NAC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2014

Eaten a number of times at the Metropolitain (spelling in Trip Advisor is incorrect). Place is busy and has a regular clientele of Parliamentarians and Senators as well as press and ministerial staff and that attracts others. It does mean that often despite many empty tables one is told they are all reserved. However serving staff is always welcoming and accommodating. Wine by the glass is not cheap. Food is generally quite good although it leans more to a pub style rather than gourmet...a plus on quantity...e.g.plenty of chips but tasted as frozen fries and rather soggy and oily. Some surprises like their Croque Monsieur..huge and heavy. Usually have their Mussels in wine which are good but of course not hard to cook. Main courses are somewhat pricy for their quality..e.g.have had better and more tender steak elsewhere for one-third less cost.
