“Great location, very fair price, not too frilly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2012

Half a block from the main area of Byward market, friendly staff. I like the laminated floors rather than carpeted in other hotels, the bed was fine, the furnishing was decent, the amenities were good, the TV wasn't HD (I don't think) but I'm not a tv-watcher, anyway.

An excellent choice for a budget hotel. The only down side I found was the wifi - sometimes the signal strength just wasn't good and trying to jump from one of the 5 or 6 available signals caused havoc with the signing in for access, depending on what device you are on (I used a Touch, the latest iPad and a hackintoshed iDell).

Unfortunately, I really did need steady and dependable wifi since I was working from my room and needed Skype and to watch some streaming video and I couldn't really do either.

This was the only reason I left the hotel to camp out at another one and I would have been very happy to have stayed on except for this issue. But if you're not dependent on wifi, this place is very decent and affordable and I would heartily recommend it for those with modest wifi needs and a firm line on the Tavel budget.

Room Tip: Some rooms had balconies, some patios, some neither so ask what's available (and ask about the w...

My usual hotel was sold out so I stayed here for a few days while at a convention in the new convention centre. It was easy walking distance to the centre, to the Rideau Mall and to the Parliament buildings and that was my favourite part.

My room was rather scuffed, from the door frame to the laminate floor. The bedframe came apart from the headboard when I sat on the bed. The TV was an older model. I'm sure this place has not been updated for some time. I did like the art work around the Inn; it's something you don't see in the bigger corporate hotels.
It was nice to have breakfast available; it was the usual fare for this sort of hotel.

I probably won't stay here again but for price conscious travellers looking for a 2 and a half to a three star hotel in a great location, it's worth considering.

The Byward Blue Inn is located in the ByWard Market area of Ottawa. It's location, on a quiet, residential street is perfect. It's convenient to the Market area and downtown Ottawa for getting around but it's just far enough off the main street area that sounds from the street don't disturb at night. The bed was very comfortable and supportive.

The rooms are very tastefully appointed and are decorated differently so if you stay more than once, it's quite possible to have a different look to your room. This gives the Inn a more intimate feel than the typical chain hotel. All but four of the forty-six rooms have a balcony or terrace affording guests the opportunity to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine in the open air. In the summer, a number of travelers will bring bicycles and keep their bikes on the balconies.

Another thing that sets the Byward Blue apart is the original art that's hanging throughout the property. All of the public spaces and most of the guest rooms have original art which adds to the intimate, more personalised feel to the Inn. Says Robert Laidlaw, owner of the Inn "We are definitely a much friendlier place. We have guests who've come back 30 and 40 times".

The Byward Blue isn't your typical 'corporate meeting' hotel, but the Inn does welcome groups and does have a number of groups that come back each year and use the sitting room and dining room for group meetings. "We have groups come back year to year and can cater in lunch or dinner", explains Laidlaw.

Included in the room rate is a full breakfast which includes coffee, tea, juice as well as both hot and cold items. In the afternoons, a coffee/tea service with light snacks is offered and this too is included in your room rate. Rates are very reasonable, starting at $89 in off season. During Winterlude the base rate is $129 which is still a terrific deal. Parking is extra. If the garage underneath the Inn is full, there's a large public garage right next door with rates about the same as Byward Blue's.

Something else that sets the Byward Blue apart and adds to the 'home away from home' feel is the way you get into your room. At the Byward Blue you have an actual key. There's something very satisfying about turning a key in a lock and hearing the solid thump of a deadbolt compared to the electronic whir of the typical card-key entry. Personally, I hope they keep the room locks that way.

I'll start by saying that I would recommend the ByWard Blue Inn to anyone visiting Ottawa.

The location could hardly have been any better (we only had to take two cab rides for our 4 day stay - from the Via Rail station and back). While staying at the hotel, you are within walking distance of all of the best attractions, including: Parliament Hill, the Canadian War Museum, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (right across the border into Quebec), the Royal Canadian Mint, the National Gallery, the Rideau Canal, the Haunted Walk, the Supreme Court of Canada, the National Library and Archives, the National War Memorial, the ByWard Market, a plethora of restaurants featuring every kind of cuisine imaginable, and many more.

The hotel itself was very quaint, homey and welcoming. There is a fireplace lounge with complimentary tea, coffee, snacks and newspapers which any of the guests are encouraged to partake. The room is nice, and perhaps just above what is to be expected for a 3-star hotel. There is a microwave, TV, mini-fridge, dishes, cupboards, and in some rooms even a balcony. My main point of contention is that the walls of the hotel were decidedly thin, as you could hear talking and water flow coming from other rooms which detracted from the sleep (perhaps we just had poor neighbours, but the point remains). I would suggest getting a pair of ear-plugs which seemed to solve the noise problems for us.

The complimentary continental breakfast was above-average, and consisted of a very solid and balanced selection of food items. In a note, computer access was also very convenient, as you must only ask to borrow a laptop from the front desk (with which you can use as long as you need).

Lastly, the hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. They will gladly offer you any pertinent information about the city (including a complimentary map of the city with their annotations) and they all appear to be very knowledgeable. The staff simply creates a very welcoming ambiance, and it was overall a very good experience.

The ByWard Blue Inn is excellent value for your money, and I would certainly recommend this establishment.

Room Tip: The corner rooms have a balcony with sitting room, so if you are interested in that place a request...

I spent two nights at the ByWard Blue Inn in January 2012 and was quite pleased.

THE LOCATION was perfect! It was close to everything! Walking distance from the National Art Gallery, Ottawa Convention Centre, Rideau Centre, ByWard Market, National Arts Centre, Parliament Hill, University of Ottawa, Rideau Canal and a lot of boutiques, galleries, cafes, restaurants and pubs!

MY ROOM had a simple layout and was clean. It was not luxurious but I had all that I needed: a comfortable bed, a kitchenette, a TV, free Internet, a telephone, a closet and a bathroom with a tub. During my stay, it was really quiet and I had a great night’s sleep. I was on the ground floor at the back of the hotel with access to a patio. The room was cold and I had to crank the thermostat on my first night, which didn't do much at first but it slowly became warmer throughout the night. I had to use the additional blanket in order to keep warm but then again it was really cold when I visited Ottawa (minus 30's with the wind chill factor).

THE KITCHENETTE with microwave and mini-fridge was really appreciated. In the cupboards you could find plates, bowls, glasses, wine glasses, mugs and utensils. There was also a coffee machine and coffee packets with sugar.

THE BREAKFAST was more than I had expected. There was cold and hot options: muffins, toast, jam, cereal, coffee, tea, juice, hot and cold milk, fruits, eggs, ham and home fries.

THE STAFF was really courteous and helpful. When I noticed that the coffee machine in my room wasn't working, the man at reception took the broken machine out of my room and less than five minutes later, another nice staff member came to my room with a new coffee maker.

I would recommend the ByWard Blue Inn for its price, service and great location.

Great location, very clean, breakfast and tea time were lovely! I didn't want to leave this review for fear of making the Inn too popular :) Noise levels were a little high, but could be due to proximity to the elevator.

Room Tip: Avoid room next to elevator if possible.

What a terrific, quaint, affordable, and convenient place to stay in Ottawa. While not luxurious by the 4 & 5 Star standards it is CLEAN and COMFORTABLE and exceeds any 3 star place I've stayed at before. The room had everything one could ask for (Fridge, Microwave, Coffee pot, television, an extremely comfortable bed, free internet access and a hot breakfast). The one item that really stood out was the Customer Service by ALL staff. Talk about making you feel wanted, these people are terrific. They display the utmost sincerity and are incredibly helpful. What a treat it was to stay here.
