“Good Atmosphere & Location - Still some kinks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

I've been here twice since the Sparks St. location opened. Pros so far: Excellent atmosphere, clean, open, big enough to handle the crowds, somewhat interesting menu, good appetizers, good deserts, good whisky specials (*only* on wednesdays). Challenges/issues: Portions aren't great, underwhelming steak, underwhelming burger, more than half the beers listed not available. It would probably be best if they simplified their "fidelity card" that they've been handing out. . . apparently you have to log-in online in order to activate it and see any benefit - their servers also never explained this fact to my friends and I before we returned again. Also - spirit prices are steep unless there is a special (and one has to verify to see whether the special rules apply). The menu really should be updated to include a comprehensive regular price list for all spirit brands so that folks know where they stand. Given the food and type of drinks they serve, their prices reflect Montreal or Toronto markets and not Ottawa. That needs to change. Prices need some adjusting. Staff are generally friendly, but they really should spread folks out more when they seat people. So much nice space affords patrons privacy and comfort on non-busy days -- but only if they get seated far enough away from one another. I know other places tend to bunch people, but it really is a shame in such a nice new big venue like this.

“Wanted it to be more. Still likely to return.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Great location - one block south on corner of Bank and Sparks - can see the West Block of Praliament from the dining room. Lovely inside, huge, multi level with the big brewing kettles. Nice atmosphere and for a walking evening out as a visitor I think it would be a great place to stop as you meander down Sparks Street and around Parliament and even venture down Bank Street shopping. HUsband and I tried the beer sampler and although they are award winning, I was underwhelmed and - personally (this is MY opinion) I like the local crafted beer at The BIg Rig Pub much better. The food options here were nice - menu is fairly big and varied - and not the same old same old pub food. They might actually want to pare down the offerings and just do them better as everyone knows you can't offer all that stuff and think your guests will believe it is all made inhouse (read: Sodexho/ Aramark likley supply them...) It was nice they had the suggested beer parings listed right in the menu. It is average priced ($12-15 for a burger, $12-15 for a sandwich, etc.). I had the "open faced country" sandwich $11.99 - ham, goat cheese on homestyle coutry bread. It was good. Needed something though - the herbs were not quite right and it needed either less cheese or more ham. It came with both a side salad and fries. That was nice. BUT ASK FOr DRESSING ON THE SIDE. My salad was much too wet. The inhouse dressing is quite good though. So overall, could it be better - yes and with simple little things & greater attention to detail in the kitchen. Was it worth what we paid - yes. Was the atmosphere and location worth it - yes. BUT because it wasn't stellar food and the service was only average, I can only truly rate it as 3* = average. WE will likely go back but until we try the other couple of brew pubs in town as so far The Big Rig has better food and beer (for me) but lacks the atmosphere - when I go out to eat and have a beer with friends, atmosphere is less important.

“Tried it, but once is enough.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013 via mobile

Went for lunch. No one finished their meals as overall the menu is way to big and uninspired. Busy place, 38 minutes from order to delivery, which is acceptable.

The Sparks beer was good but the others lacked variety of style. Too bad the IPA wasn't on, but I'd rather choose from more than 4 bland ales and a decent wheat beer.

The place is nice inside but the atmosphere is taken down a knotch by the strange music videos on TV's. I wouldn't want to sit at the bar in a cold day (right by the doors).

Too bad so many people visiting Ottawa hotels will be exposed to pre-made frozen food rather than creative items inspired by local meat/produce by actual chefs.

“New Spot Downtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Arrived at 12:10 for a lunch appointment at 12:30 in this new (January 2013) bistro in downtown Ottawa (240 Sparks) - no reservations taken ----line up down the inside hall at down Bank Street at the outside door. Early, so got in line....moved smoothly and when friend arrived at the set time we got a table 'upstairs' --- this is a masssive facility with hundreds of seats. Great door hostess, smoot service, and considering the size, pretty quick delivery of lunch order. Appears to be a France-based chain specializing in food from the northern area with Germany. Reasonable prices, friendly/professional service and good food ---- should do well in the Ottawa noon hour - hope it can survive the Ottawa no-go downtown on the weekends.
