“Amazing Ribs, Gravy and Poutine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

As a serious fan of southern BBQ, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food here.

We started with poutine topped with pulled pork. The pork was tender and smoky, but the star was the gravy. Made in-house from smoked chicken, it was amazing. The whole combination was very good and the order was huge, easily enough to share among the whole table.

I only ordered a half rack of the baby back ribs because sometimes they are dry at smokehouses, but these were the best ribs I've had all year. The meat was generously smoked, falling off the bone, but still tender. Great sauce, ciabatta-style bun was great for mopping it up. I really wished I had ordered the whole rack.

The side orders here are huge, meant to be shared family-style.

The only flaw in the meal was that the water came straight from the tap and was too warm to be refreshing, even with the addition of ice

“Great spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Went for dinner with a group of 8. No complaints with sevice or food. Lots of selection and good quality of product. Nice selection of draft beer on tap as well.

No complaints and will certainly re-visit.

“Amazing BBQ in Ottawa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

This was my first time at this establishment. I saw it featured on "You Gotta Eat Here" on the Food Channel. I was expecting to be disappointed but I must say it was the complete opposite. This place is amazing! It satisfies those looking for really great smoked BBQ flavor, but the chef adds his own twist on the spices. There is a definite Jamaican flare. It all adds up to really tasty, out of the ordinary food. I started off with a $5 pint because it was Monday, quite a bargain. Then I ordered the wings tossed with the hot sauce and a side of blue cheese dip. I also ordered a side of the piri piri sauce. The wings were perfectly cooked and extremely tasty. I will warn you about the piri piri sauce. It is very fiery and lasts a long time in your mouth. It has amazing garlic flavor along with the heat, which makes it addictive. You keep going back to it despite the pain. You almost feel like you are on a high. Quite amazing. We then had the brisket. It was extremely tender and flavorful, full of smoke and topped with a great coffee laced BBQ sauce. A great combination. For sides we had baked beans a fries. The beans were very tasty, full of meat and baked to a nice subtle crust. The fries were nicely seasoned and not greasy. If you are a BBQ fan, this place is a must, no matter where you are from.

Who could ask for more? Above average BBQ and a big 50. Go for the food. Feel comfortable in an understated environment. Easy for conversation.

“Good food but needs work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Went to the Smoque Shack based on reviews here and on other sites. It seemed to be the BBQ place that stood out in the Market area so decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is a bit hard to see because it's separated from the more commercial part of the Market by private homes. Even though we had the address and are from the area, we still were not sure. Once we finally found the place, we were surprised to find a relatively spacious and nicely decorated restaurant. Service was outstanding throughout the meal and everyone there was really friendly. Were this place looses points is on the meats. We order a sampler with pulled pork, beef brisket and rib, and added a small portion of Jerk pork. For the price, portions were quite small and, when they arrived, the meats were barely warm. Although the taste was OK, nothing was outstanding. Usually a BBQ joint has a signature meat but of the four we had, none were above average. To complement the meal, we also ordered a few side dishes (all side dishes are extra) that were nice, especially the coleslaw.
In the end, we kinda enjoyed our meal but the jury is still out as to whether we will be back there or not. We will certainly try the other BBQ restaurants that have opened up in Ottawa in order to decide what will be our go to BBQ joint in the Capital.
