“Good but needs updating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Went mainly to see the locomotive gallery (for my child). Most of the trains are closed, can't access them. The Space part of the museum is under renovation and closed. The children's area is good, needs more interactive display areas. Would have liked to see more interactive areas.

“An afternoon at the Science and Tech Museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Facility: Looks a somewhat like a warehouse from the outside, but modern on the inside.
Impressions: Some Ottawa posters have noted that the museum is not hands-on enough (for a science centre), not foward looking, and that it had displays that were there for too many years. This may be true if you have seen it year after year, but as a first time visitor, we found it to be engaging for the children. Especially if you have young children (less than 10) there is a lot to offer. There were displays that we have not seen elsewhere such as the crazy kitchen, the boat navigation display, the human gerbil energy generation wheel, the Canadian car display, 'try to get in the canoe' display, the submarine periscope out of the building roof, the giant steam locomotives, and the one kids really love - the light tunnel maze (designed to simulate a bit of information going through the fibre). The light maze is elevated and the black light tubes constantly change colour. The maze has a few really dark tube slides going down. Children love to run through it.
Food: They have a cafeteria that serves the usual fare and they seem to tolerate you bringing a lunch as well.
Coat check: They have a do it yourself free check.
Fee: If you have a science centre membership, there is a good chance it is accepted at another science centre (in both Canada and the US). We were able to use our home science centre membership here for a free general admission. Check your science centre web site for the list of reciprocal science centres offering free admission.
Parking: Ample parking for free is appreciated because I have not been to one other science centre where you are not charged for parking.
Overall: After about 3 hours, we probably still left some things on the table for next time. We found our visit to be worth while.

“Not up to international standards”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

The Ottawa Science centre should be renamed - the best thing is the train exhibit. I've been to Science Centres around the world including Toronto, Orlando etc - they are usually modern places that engage you to the principles of science. While in Ottawa it is more fun to take your family to Museum of Civilizations, Museum of Nature or the Art Gallery - these are modern and downtown, and engaging. This is more antiquated - not engageing at all - in fact is less engaging than even the Agricultural Museum. If you are visiting Ottawa - don't make this the one museum you see.

“Science and Tech Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

The science and tech museum of Ottawa is great fun. Not only is it full of science fun and facts, but historical as well. At this museum you will find the infamous 'crooked kitchen' display. Here you can experience the crooked kitchen for yourself by walking this way and that through the unlevel and quirky kitchen. Great fun for Mom, Dad and the kids! Not only is there many interactive learning displays on board but the ever so popular 'electric maze' as I like to call it. Which is a maze hovering above the cafeteria and museum displays. The halls are lit by black-lights making anything white and bright glow! There are a series of rooms displaying light technology. Much fun and education for everyone. Definately a must see if you into the museum scene. Midway, known as Ottawa's fun spot for the kids, is also located just down the way. 2 in 1 might I say?

“I'm a member but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

I wouldn't go out of my way if I was visiting Ottawa to go here because it's a good science and tech museum but not the best. There are some hands on activities for children but really not that many. The enormous trains are worth checking out.
