We had a seven night stay at this Marriott hotel in November 2007. We checked in very late at night (as indicated on our booking) and it went smoothly, but no offer of assistance with our large amount of luggage. Although we booked and paid for a king room, the late check-in resulted in us being given a lower floor double room instead.

Room was very spacious, clean and well fitted out, though showing signs of age (e.g. inadequate bathroom ventilation, no master power switch near the beds, etc.). The main problem was elevator noise, unsurprising as we were very closely located to the elevators on floor 7. After two nights, we enquired about upgrading to the room we'd booked and that request was dealt with very quickly and in a friendly way, so we moved up to a 20th floor room with a view and king bed (as booked). This room was much nicer - but still plagued by the ridiculous amount of elevator noise, which persisted the rest of our stay.

12pm check-out time is friendly and received good level of assistance with storing baggage and loading taxi to the airport.

The hotel is in a reasonable location, though very limited dining options within walking distance (a reasonable Thai is very close, thankfully). We had a great meal in the Merlot revolving restaurant atop this hotel, great food, great views and not bad value. The same can't be said about the accommodation though - 7-night stay with internet access (no wi-fi anywhere here by the way) came to over C$2000 even including a couple of weekend discount nights, way too much for what it is in our opinion.

Good for business and access to downtown offices, etc. but tourists surely have much better value options than here.

“About what you would expect”

Stayed at the Ottawa Marriott in early of Nov 2007.

Hotel itself, is older than newer, but I've stayed at Marriott's that were definitely much older. You can usually tell by #1 the thermostat (digital vs analog) and #2 by the bathroom fixtures. Thermostat at the Ottawa Marriott were analog and had a tiny temperature gauge and the fixtures were fairly new. So again, not extremely old, but not anything that had any renovations lately.

The lobby restaurant had decent food and service was quite pleasant. I noticed that they had a buffet, but I never tried it. The lobby does not have a 24 hour mini mart however. Came downstairs to buy myself an ice cream treat, but it had closed 10 mins prior. Clerk was nice to offer to go get the keys to get me the ice cream, but I thanked him and opted to just forgo my late night urges.

Roomservice: I usually order the next day's breakfast with the door hang tag, and order poached eggs. The yolks came out hard as a rock and the eggs itself were extremely dry.

There's a Tim Horton's across the street that is open 24 hours for late night eats.

All in all, things that mattered: cleanliness, bedding, customer service, is about what you expect from a Marriott. Wasn't Excellent or earth shatteringly awesome, but had an easy stay with little troubles. That's what really matters when you're a frequent traveler.

“Good Business Hotel”

Stayed at the Ottawa Marriott for four nights on a recent business trip. Overall, I would rate the hotel and the staff quite well.

Hotel: A short taxi ride from the airport, the Ottawa Marriott is located in downtown Ottawa. Business travellers and those needing access to Federal government offices will appreciate the location. If you're there to see the sights, its also a good choice, although a bit of a walk from sites such as museums, the market, and the canal. If you go in the summer time, this is really not that much of an issue aside from finding places to eat. Being in the business area of downtown, there were lots of quick breakfast and lunch kinds of places near the hotel, but dinner options were more limited. I did a lot of walking to go eat in the evenings as I did not have a car. The area seemed safe, although not too active after dark.

The hotel itself appears to be an older facility. I understand that they have updated the building and rooms of late, and it shows in most areas. The hotel is clean, as was the room. Ate at the resturant downstairs once. Good food, very good service, and not overly priced given that it was a hotel resturant. A second resturant, a revolving kind at the top of the building, is supposed to have great views and food, but never ate there. Thought about it once, but it was the weekend, and they were booked. There's a Starbucks off the lobby. A Tim Horton's is just down the street.

I arrived later than expected and minus one of my bags. The desk clerk was very nice, gave me a travel kit so I could shave and brush my teeth. The bellman gave me great directions and suggestions on sights and food. Took a lot of time to make sure he was steering me in the direction of things I wanted to see/do/eat. The next day, the desk phoned to say my bag had arrived and they would send it up asap, but with a tour group checking in, a bellman might be a while. But, within three minutes he was there with the bag. A call was made shortly thereafter to make sure everything was okay (I appreciated the nice touch).

The Room: The room was across the hall from the elevator bank and there were five of them. Still, it was generally quiet and I didn't notice it. But, the room (over 10 stories up) looked out on the top of the first floor area of the building and you can hear the heating system below. Its white noise after a time, and didn't really bother me, but if you're sensitive to these kinds of things, ask to be away from this side of the building. The bathroom was odd in one respect. The renovation added tile to the floor (I assume) and it is not flush with the carpet in the main area. I bumped in to it twice during nightly visits to the bathroom. The room did show some wear, and was not fancy, but a good room with what you'd expect from the chain. Internet service was available for a charge.

All in all, this is a nice place. Handy for business, and generally accomodating. If you're looking for a romantic outing or something close to tourist sites, this may not be the first choice, but not a bad one in any respect.

“clean and friendly”

Ottawa Marriott

We stayed at this Marriott last weekend 10/19-10/21. Clean hotel, friendly staff, and excellent location. As some have commented the parking can be pricey but you have options. Park at the hotel and walk everywhere, do not add parking at the front desk, and pay the vending machine $15 per day when you depart. Or you can add parking at the front desk during check in and pay $19 per day but get the added benefit of unlimited in & out.

It worked out that we only left the hotel by car once during our stay so the $15/day worked for us. This hotel is on the corner of Sparks street, which is a beautiful pedestrian mall. We walked down Sparks each night to the Byward market area for dinner.

The pool and hot tub were clean and well maintained and not crowded when we visited. The bellhop station was very helpful on dinner suggestions and walking directions. Everything in the room worked as it should and the maid service was excellent. It is not a five star hotel but it is a reliable Marriott.

My luggage was not delivered for almost 7 hours after checkin. It took four attempts and with my tour director's involvement to recover it. . I had to attend a dinner party that night without the proper change of clothing. No apology from anyone of the hotel staff after it was recovered. It was misdelivered to some one else's room who reported as such to the front desk somewhere after 9:30 PM. The atttitude of the hotel staff was like it was a common everyone occurrence with them and wasn't a big worry. Never again at a Marriott. Will make AAA Colorado, my tour agency and Traffalgar, my tour company aware of this nightmare.
