“Great Family Lodging”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

We just returned from an extended holiday that began with a four day stay at Les Suites in Ottawa and this is our fifth stay here. We love the location, the size of the suites and the service of Chris and the whole staff. We love that we can walk to the Market, the parliament building, as well as other touristy places. And it is only a quick drive to a whole host of other destinations. We have stayed in a variety of suites here and they have all been excellent for our family. The kitchen and the in room laundry facilities are great for a family with young children. Finally, the staff is incredibly professional and quick to help with whatever we need. This is clearly our hotel of choice when staying in Ottawa.

We rented this suite for my 19th birthday. Heart of downtown, literally. 20 step walk from the Rideau Centre, The canal is super close (good for skating in the winter) beautiful scenery in the summer, 5 minute walk to the bars and another 5 minute walk to Parliament. The suites were very clean, big and well worth my money. I had myself plus 7 others in there at the beginning and 4 of us slept there overnight. Two on the bed and two on the pull out couch. They however charged me for something after our stay and to this day I still have no idea what it is. There are a couple of clubs across the road and down the street from it so if you have a room facing the window area it can kind of get loud on the weekends. Other than that this hotel was amazing

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your awesome review -- it was a pleasure to host you and your family on your special occasion! Our one-bedroom suites are quite spacious and can accommodate up to four people. Our downtown location is amazing … within walking distance of Parliament Hill, the historic Byward Market, the Rideau Centre, museums, etc. For your next stay, you and your family may wish to book a “courtyard view” suite with our Reservations Department. These suites will minimize any type of downtown noise intrusion. Please do call the Hotel at 613-232-2000 and ask to speak with a Duty Manager who will be more than pleased to explain your charges.

Sincerely,

Myself, hubby and our 2 year old and 7 month old stayed at Les Suites from Fri Aug 10 to Sun Aug 12. My son loves trains so we did a VIA trip - Les Suites is a short 10 min cab ride from the station. Les Suites is a great moderate-range hotel located steps from Byward Market. Yes, in the near vicinity are some shelters, but you're in the city centre and that's to be expected. My experience is in line with all the other positive reviews already posted. The rooms are spacious and clean. The premiere suites are nicely updated. Noise was not an issue because we were thoughtfully given an interior room. Yes, elevators are a bit slow and this is not a four-star hotel but is it not pretending to be. Very good customer service, clean, well-maintained rooms and helpful staff. Good value for getting that much space right downtown. I was very pleased with my stay and the GM, Chris Pierce, went out of his way to help me with my reservation. We will definitely stay here again - perfect for a family with small children. Also - I would highly recommend it to people traveling with family. I

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are very quiet.

We just return from a weekend in Ottawa On. Canada where we stayed at Les Suites Hotel . Its location was great we were not too far from any main attraction. I found the taxi service very good and helpful when asked which were the good spots to visit. The hotel itself was pleasant . The rooms were spacious and clean. You had all you wanted in the hotel. The only issue I had was parking. The hotel had parking but if it got full you had to park elsewhere. Even that was not so bad there was a lot of parking lots and underground parking around. This was an all round good trip we had no suprises.

Room Tip: If you get a room face out from the main entrance you get a little balcony, and if you go high you g...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your great review of our hotel during your recent stay with us. Our guests love our fully-equipped, condominium-sized suites – why pay the same price for a small hotel room! As you probably were not aware, the parking garage attached to Les Suites Hotel is run by a third party. During high hotel occupancy, parking on site may not be available. Our Front Desk Agents are available to direct guests to other nearby parking facilities. I look forward to hosting you again in future!

We stayed at Les Suites for 5 weeks in a standard room. There are two different "styles" of rooms in the hotel, the "premium" (dark coloured furniture/cabinets, that seem to be in most advertising pictures for the hotel),and the standard rooms. The standard rooms and the floors they are on, are badly in need of renovations and care. If you want a decent room expect to pay more for a premium room, which makes this hotel very expensive for what it is.

The corridors on our floor had damaged walls, and stained carpets. Our room was a one bedroom, with threadbare and stained furniture (we bought fabric refresher to spray on the furniture as things smelled bad), stained curtains, stained carpets, insulation was coming out of the side of the dishwasher, damaged closet doors, the phone in the living area did not work (even after it had been serviced), a very dirty balcony (covered in dirt, bird feces and bird feathers, so we did not go out onto the space) and air conditioning that only seemed to work into the living area and the "office", not in the bedroom. We ended up buying a fan to use in the bedroom. The appliances in the kitchen and laundry were all quite old and the oven only worked sometimes. Having in-suite laundry was very nice and we made substantial use of it.

On our arrival we did receive a welcome basket from the hotel that had a laundry basket, laundry soap, pitchers for juice and milk, scissors and a cookie sheet. We used all the items during our stay and left them for other guests to use after we left.

The service from the front desk is very hit or miss. Some staff were great and gave us directions to a park for our son, and told us where the grocery stores were. Unfortunately there was one staff member, Brian, who seemed that he would rather be doing anything other than being at the front desk, and through different dealings with him we found him to be the least friendly helpful of all the front desk staff. He was particularly unhelpful in retrieving some documents that had been left for us at the front desk and also unhelpful with trying to send a fax (even though in both occasions we were in the lobby at non-peak times and there were no other guests that needed assistance at that time). We had other staff that quite happily sent faxes, or brought paper to the computer room. We did have an issue at check-out where the hotel had applied less than the amount that we had paid as a deposit, and even though the staff member had the receipt in front of her that showed the amount we had paid at check-in, (the hotel keeps a small folder on the long stay guests to keep info together) she still argued with my husband and it took a substantial amount of time to get the bill sorted out. Awful.

Housekeeping is also very hit or miss and in our experience it was abysmal in this hotel. With a long term stay you receive once a week housekeeping. As we did not have enough towels in the room for us to use for once complete week (even with re-use) coupled with the fact that leaving a bunch of wet towels on the floor for the week is gross, we washed all of the towels ourselves in the in-suite laundry. Only one cleaning for the room was completed with any type of completeness (sheets changed, floors vacuumed, surfaces wiped, sinks cleaned), our other cleanings resulted in staff doing nothing more than changing sheets on the bed and putting a bar of soap in the bathroom (again, I was the one washing and putting away the towels, and we took out our own garbage/recycling, so someone not cleaning the room was bizzare). We then called housekeeping to ask when someone would be returning to finish the room, and we always sent staff who were at the end of their shift, who still didn't finish the room and just wanted to go home. In all my years of travel, this was the worst housekeeping experience I have ever had, and it also lead me to really wonder how clean anything in the hotel actually was.

As other reviewers have written, the pool area is shared with the Novotel and it can be extremely crowded/busy. More often than not, pool towels were not re-stocked, and the locker area was dirty. The business centre really only is two computers and two printers, so if you really do need something sent or done, you may want to use the Fairmont business centre as we did. The rooms are quite noisy, you will hear people in the corridor, doors slamming and you will hear the guests above and beside you. As the rooms are large, we found many 20 somethings and sports teams stay here, and we found that we weekends can be a bit like a frat house with drunk, noisy "adults" seemingly everywhere. The hotel doesn't have proper security so we had people who were not from our floor/hotel roaming the halls. The hotel participates in the "stars of the city" program, so be prepared for staff to be providing you with a pamphlet and the expectation that you will be filling it in with their info for them to receive an award (which is fine to an extent, but when I had a staff member who told me we could send in several with their name on it, I wasn't impressed).

The hotel is two blocks from the byward market were there is a farmer's market, shops, bars and restaurants. The market can be very expensive for everyday groceries, so go to the Metro grocery store (three blocks from the hotel) for those items. There is also a dollar store nearby so if you need additional kitchen items as we did (we found that our kitchen was not well stocked) you can pick up what you need for very little cost.

We won't be back, nor would I reccomend the place, we just had far too many issues.
