“Comfort and Value on the Hill”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

This is the second time using the hotel. Both times have been a good experience. Beds are comfortable and the staff are very helpful. Rooms are well appointed and there is lots of hot water. Meeting facilities were good. Food was good quality and very tasty. Close to Parliament Hill and lots of great restaurants within a reasonable walk,

The rooms were a bit and the warm side and it was hard to get the temperature down (early April stay).i

I stayed at The Lord Elgin for 2 nights with my husband and teenage daughter during Winterlude. The location was perfect - immediately across the street from Confederation park and a very short walk to the parliament buildings, and about 10 minutes walk to Byward Market. We had a corner Parkview King room and our daughter had a twin cot with a real frame and mattress (not one of those horrible folding cots).

The room was large and clean, and service was ok given the busy time of year. The parking garage was full, so we parked a block away at a government building, which suited us fine because it cost only about $7 per day versus $30 charged by the hotel.

There was a pool and small fitness room, but both are small relative to the size of the hotel, and neither were particularly nice (although clean, and fine for the kids).

I would agree with previous reviews that say this hotel is nothing special. It is excellent value for the location, and I would still recommend it for families.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your 'Winterlude' stay with us. We are in the perfect spot to enjoy the best of Winterlude, being just a block from the Rideau Canal and across from Confederation Park. Thank you as well for recognizing the excellent value.

We hope you will be able to come back again when you next are in Ottawa.

Sincerely,

Stayed on the 10th floor and right from the assistance getting the luggage in to leaving it was a great experience. I cannot praise the staff enough including the lady who sorted my room, she was joy to talk to each day. I embraced the Eco room philosophy and if I had remembered to put my sign outside my door everyday I would have got $5 off the good buffet breakfast. ($18 normally). My colleague did this and it made the breakfast even better value. The beds were some sort of memory foam which was very comfortable after the initial shock where it felt uneven. I used the Laundry service which again was faultless. So why not a five rating? I extended my final day (latest checkout 17:00) so I could shower before my flight, at $85 I thought this was a little high. My heating in my room took at while to get right and occasionally rattled which required me to grab the rail on the ceiling air vent to fix. The pool was a little chilly. I would however highly recommend you to stay here.

What a lovely review! Thank you.

We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay in March and found our beds to be comfy. Our staff love to receive such reviews with praise. They are a great team! We are quite flexible with late checkouts, unless we have a full house coming in, which was likely the case when you checked out.

We do hope you will have an opportunity to come back to Ottawa and stay with us again.

With best wishes,

We stayed two nights at the hotel, which meant we were eligible for a slightly discounted rate. We were two adults in a double queen room. The entire hotel is non-smoking.

The Lord Elgin is in a great location, very central to all the downtown sites and within walking distance of: NAC, Parliament Hill, Rideau Canal, Byward Market, U of O, Rideau Centre Mall, Sparks Street, Ottawa Convention Centre. There are bus stops both ways, just outside the front doors.

Upon arriving to the hotel, we were treated with polite efficiency and thorough care. The reservation was correct and ready. Our room was spotless and well appointed. Twice we had issues with our room entry cards not working, but we were issued with new ones quickly at reception. The beds were comfortable and linens fresh and neat. Our room had a fridge, which is handy, and a Keurig coffee/tea making machine with complimentary teas and coffees. CoffeeMate should be banned!! Please consider having small UHT creamers and milkers instead! It was tacky to have a $4 charge on the bottled water in the room. Little complimentary things like that go a long way in securing return guests.

The staff were caring and helpful. Although we opted out of the housekeeping services for our first night (a $5 incentive voucher is slipped under the door after the second night for use in Grill 41), one of the housekeepers on our floor still came in to tidy up a bit, and whilst in the room saw that my Mum was resting. Mum was going to make herself a cup of tea, but the lady offered to make it for her, and served it to her. That was very thoughtful. She also brought us an extra shampoo. The hotel provides Gilchrist and Soames toiletries.

Free internet and wifi is provided with a password given at check-in. At times the internet is sluggish and slow, but generally worked well. Local calls, including to areas in Hull, are free. A large screen TV is provided with lots of channel variety. Be aware of the pay-per-view movies, especially if you have children or teens who don't know what that means!

I was awoken from a deep sleep at 1am our second night due to very loud guests in nearby rooms, with doors slamming and loud talking in the hallway for about an hour. Perhaps a reminder at check-in to a quiet policy between 11pm - 7am would go a long way to remind guests to be more mindful of others. Regular patrolling of the hallways at night would also reduce disturbances.

A real bone of contention was the compulsory $28 (+ tax and tip) valet parking service per night - very steep when other nearby hotels charge $15 for parking, also with in and out privileges.

Although we did not eat meals at the hotel, we ordered a dessert from Grill 41 one evening and were aghast at the cost of $9 + tax and tip for a tiny piece of hazelnut chocolate cake with an under-ripe strawberry as garnish. The on-site Starbucks is still closed, with no notice as to when it will open. Do not advertise on the website that there is a Starbucks at the Lord Elgin until it reopens!!

Attended a brunch event in the Pearson Room which was very nice, although the scrambled eggs were not fresh; they tasted as if they were from a dehydrated mix. It would have been very helpful to have our check-out time extended until 2pm in order to change our clothes afterwards, but the hotel would only allow us until 1pm, even though we had intentionally stayed at the hotel because of the brunch event. As a result, we had to check our luggage in the luggage storage room and were invited to use the Fitness change room which, although was neat and clean, is small (there were 5 women in there at the time, all trying to change).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but I get the impression that the Lord Elgin is attempting to be a more luxurious hotel than what it offers. Perhaps it has an inferiority complex to its more famous neighbour, the Chateau Laurier. We have stayed at the Business Inn down the road and have had just as nice a stay at a lower rate, including breakfast and cheaper parking.

Room Tip: Parkside rooms, although slightly more expensive, do have a nice view, but may be noisy with traffic...

When things get tough and you don't want to travel too far from home, you look/book local. We did nd we were so glad we did. The staff at the Lord Elgin were more than helpful. They nade the "human battery recharge" an excellent experience. Reservation was easy and helpful. I wasnt sure about a wine selection for our resonably priced room and they actually got the wine list and price list and phoned me right back with details. Thats so helpfull when your not sure ! The help at the front desk and the attnedants in the morning were more than helpful and very quick to help us back on our way.
Sometimes a trip doesnt have to be that long,it can be just a weekend. With such a beautiful hotel and courteous staff and great food and sevice.W were ready to start our week at work ! Thanks everyone at the Lord Elgin !!

We were only in Ottawa 3 days and to be honest I might have had time to get disappointed with this hotel if we'd been there any longer.
The hotel itself is a lovely grand building but is a little dated in terms of the room decor, the bedroom was a little strange as there was too much being squeezed into it for me.
The bed was squished into the smaller side next to the small bathroom and in the bigger portion of the room was a small sofa, desk and chest of drawers, bit much for me really. The view was out the back and of some non-descript skyscrapers.
However, the staff when we arrived were brilliant, two ladies on the front desk went to great efforts to make sure we were sorted for the bus journey later in the day to the Canadian Tyre Center (Another story entirely getting there!), they really made a difference to our stay and the hotel's rating!
We only had one meal in the restaurant and it was lovely, so all in all it was a good stay.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Lord Elgin.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the service provided while with us. Our staff has received a number of awards for service and we are very proud of them.

We are working with designers now to refresh our guestrooms and I am excited with the plans. We do hope you will have a chance to come back and see them for yourselves.

Could not ask for a better location!! We had a view of the park, during wintelude lots to see outside the window!
Very comfortable room, it was my birthday and the hotel sent a card and truffles to our room before we arrived to our room - very nice touch! Lobby could use some upgrading; however we had a very nice visit! Definelty would book again

Room Tip: view of the park is great!

We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us over Winterlude What a great time of year and we love the energy surrounding us during this festival.

We have just updated all of our lobby furnishings and lighting is on it's way. We love the new look. Still a few touches to go before we are done, so we hope you will be back to see the updates.
