“uber stylish & helpful (with some teeny tiny rooms)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

first of all - i love the style of this hotel. love the fresh, unique rooms & clean lines of the decor. perfect for the visitor who loves modern design!

while the first room we were given was terribly terribly too small for ourselves and our young child (when they brought the cot in there was nowhere free for the bellhop and our family to stand in the room - 2 of us went into the hall) kindly the front desk moved us to a much larger room as a free upgrade. the new room was spacious and wonderful (top floor) . the staff here is wonderful!

the decor in each of the rooms we saw was modern and fabulous and impeccable
very stylish reception area as well.
unique meeting rooms available, too.

while the bar area is snazzy looking, the food it terribly overpriced.

would highly recommend a room here if you're traveling solo or with just one other person!

I held my birthday party at the ARC's lounge and couldn't have had a better experience. They were very helpful with the planning before hand and the evening of the event there was lots of staff on hand who were very attentive to my guests. The food was great. The relaxed but sophisticated ambiance was exactly what I was looking for.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

I've stayed at Arc a few times, most recently June 2012. It is a well-located boutique-style hotel. It is very comfortable but doesn't have any 'pizzaz' to differentiate it as a boutique hotel.

One big plus is location. It is only a couple of blocks from Parliament Hill. It's about a 15 minute walk from Byward Market area. Cab fare from the airport is +/- $35.

You will be greeted at check-in with a glass of prosecco. A nice touch after a long flight.
Check-in was seamless and the staff efficient and friendly.

My room this time was cramped. The doors to the cabinet containing the bureau drawers didn't quite open because the bed was too close. This made it very difficult to store and retrieve items from the drawers. The same cabinet had the in-room coffee maker. That's a plus I appreciate, except the coffee maker was plugged in behind the cabinet so it was really tough to get at it.

The bathroom was the most annoying. The door swung inward, blocking access to the toilet. You have to do a kind of tap dance with the bathtub to get at the toilet.

Another big plus was the bed. It was a very comfortable king bed. Combined with the blackout curtains it made it easy to sleep.

Wifi was included with my rate, but doesn't seem to be inclusive with all rates. Ask and bargain, plead, or beg. Why do hotels still charge for wifi? The cost of wiring for wifi is a sunk cost. Don't try to recover it. Use free wifi as a selling feature, especially if you're a boutique hotel trying to outmaneuver the chains.

The neighbourhood is very quiet in the evening, so if you're looking for a late dinner (like anytime after 6 pm!) you'll have to walk to Byward Market or up Elgin St (about a 10 min walk). Starbucks, Tim Horton's, Subway and all the other usual suspects are within a block for your morning coffee.

There are equally comfortable chain hotels nearby. I'll go back to the Arc, but only if the rate is attractive.

We booked a Van Gogh package. It included a king room, breakfast, parking, and admission to the Van Gogh exhibit at the National Gallery. We felt it was a terrific value. The location was good- close enough to restaurants, museums, the market, and the jazz fest concerts. The room was clean, modern, and well appointed. The bed was heavenly and we got a very good night's sleep. Accomodations are not huge but it met our needs. Loved the Thann bath products! The hotel sponsored the jazz fest late night jam session and we really enjoyed having a late night snack and bottle of wine while listening to live music. I appreciate any hotel that sponsors live music! Check-in, check out and valet parking were all smooth and fast. Breakfast was delicious. My only suggestion for improvement is to include wifi in the price of the rooms. I would definitely return to ARC!

Centrally located within walking distance to shopping, restaurants & bars and many of the city's sites. Very friendly and helpful staff at check-in, valet service and at the ARC lounge!
The rooms are relatively small, but with exquisite finishes, very clean and welcoming.

This hotel is in downtown Ottawa in a very convenient location. It is within easy walking distance of many of the famous sites in the city. The reception area is small but well organized and the breakfast and dinner room is up a few stairs to the left. The room itself was terrific with all the features you expect from a top quality hotel. Excellent bedding, generous sized room, work space and bathroom. Turn down service with small chocolates, an apple and water are all nice touches. The only issue is that at least on the 3rd floor there is no view whatsoever and you are directly across from a government office building so it is important to keep the blinds drawn at various times when you are in the room and the blinds are very thick so really no light penetrates.
I ate the restaurant for breakfast and once for dinner and the food was of high quality. No buffet, only from the carte but there was a reasonable selection and the server did take an order on a variation I requested for fruit. Dinner was also good though a large party was in an adjacent room so the service was painfully slow but fortunately my dinner companion and I had plenty to speak about. My one observation was that many of the dishes have a meat plus fruit component (mango, etc) and this is not my favourite combination and I would have liked a bit more variety. Price was definitely at the high end for what is a relatively small (though capital city).

Room Tip: I had a corner room so there were two windows but one faced a brick wall and the other faced an offi...

Pros: Decent hotel in a very central location. Fashionable fixtures and details. Clean and well run.
Cons: Air conditioning unit sounded like a small jet aircraft taking off every 5 minutes or so. For a hotel of this price the a/c noise was not acceptable. Which leads me to the other point - its quite pricey compared to the competition. For 15% more we switched to the Fairmont Chateau Laurier for a room that was triple the size and had a better view and had an even better location. And had a quiet a/c unit.
