I made reservations at this hotel about a month in advance for a standard 2 double bed room. My family and I would need 2 beds for 1 night since we're a family of 4. Much to my disappointment, when we arrived this weekend, the room we wanted was no longer available. How can that be if I made reservations and they sent me a confirmation? Luckily the front desk was able to give us a new room and upgraded us to "Gold Fairmont" membership status. We received a suite instead! And it was fairly large (maybe about 700 sq ft?) and included one master bedroom. Unfortunately my sister and I still had to sleep on the sofa bed to share but it was enough space for us.
The room itself was spacious but was very awkward in terms of set up. The washroom had a lack of counter space and there was no fan. We had 2 TVs in the room although they were fairly close and pointless in my opinion because one of them was too far from the bed and the other was too high up on the table. The entire suite also only had 2 windows and no central ceiling light so it was relatively dark. My mom complained that the room was too hot and even after turning down the temperature, we had difficulties sleeping.
However, the location of the hotel is great! We walked down to the market for dinner and we were able to catch the hockey games that night. Very vibrant city and the hotel is in a primary spot. The staff were also helpful when we asked for additional towels and pillows and very prompt. The upgrade to "Gold" status also allowed us to try their breakfast and cocktail hours which had a good selection. I thought their "continental" breakfast would only be pastries and coffee, but they served seafood, meats and eggs which was nice. Overall I think the added touch on services for the “Gold” status was great for a free upgrade, but not something that I would pay the incremental $200/night for.
Aside from the initial hiccup with our rooms, I felt that Fairmont was a great stay. I didn’t sleep very well that night, but I won’t blame that on the hotel itself. The location is ideal, the services are fantastic and for the price of $319/night, I have no complaints and would recommend it.
The hotel is only 7 floors, so a room higher up is ideal. Also facing downtown would be beautiful.
