“very disappointing experience; poor customer service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2011

I've stayed at this hotel for business several times and had excellent service...how disappointing to return 9 months later for pleasure! We booked a non-smoking room; we received a room that was saturated with smoke...in carpet, bed, couch. We were assured that this was a non-smoking room and "someone must have had a cigarette which is beyond their control". They sprayed the room which further irritated my bronchitis. We were never offered a change of rooms despite numerous complaints. We felt like no one was listening to us re the smell of the room; staff did not acknowledge or note additional concerns that we reported including a plugged sink in the bathroom and a faulty toaster. Customer service training is required for front desk staff who are not knowledgable about faciilities and have no skills in addressing customer complaints!!! Long line ups and inadequate staffing for busy Canada Day weekend. Location is great but will go to other hotels in area due to very poor customer service.

I booked a weeks stay at the Cartier Place while visiting Ottawa. This was a last minute booking as my original accomodation plans fell through. I was pretty satisfied with the booking process, as I was able to book a room at 10AM for check-in the same day.
Check-in was fairly smooth, it took around 10 minutes for them to get the room ready.
However, the property is a maze of corridors & lifts, it took me another 10 minutes to just find my room as the reception doesn't botehr to point you in the right direction.

The rooms are fairly outdated (think shabby '70's carpeting & flower print curtains), however they are comfortable. I had a one bedroom suite for myself, but you could easily sleep 2 adults & 2 children as it has a fold-out couch. The bathroom is clean with a hair dryer & bathtub/shoer (no toiletetries though), and theres's a kitchenette with a full sized refrigerator, dishwasher & sink, as well as all crockery & cutlery. The living room has a small television & small balcony, and there's a safe, iron & ironing board, as well as another small television in the bedroom. Pretty much everything you'd need for a long stay, so no complaints there.

The location is excellent as it's in downtown Ottawa. Pretty much everything you'd want to see (City Hall, Rideau Canal, Parliament, War Memorial, National Arts Centre, Rideau Centre, Ottawa University, ByWard Market, National Gallery, Notre Dame Cathedral) are between a 2 - 15 minute walk from the hotel. If you are driving, I would recommend that you park in the basement (20 dollars a day), as the only other parking in the vicinity is outdoors. However, the basement is a maze as well, so be sure to remember where you parked.

The only negative (and it's a big one) is that there is absolutely no customer service at the hotel. The front desk appears to be staffed by bored college students who are least interested in helping. I found myself waiting at the front desk for atleast 10 minutes on several occassions while the staff finished their gossiping before they would even acknowledge I was there. There was also a fire alarm one of the nights that I was there, and all guests had to evacuate the building Not only were there no staff around to answer the guests questions, there was also no one to direct the guests to a safe location while we were evacuating. I'm still clueless as to the cause of the fire.

Would I stay there again? Probably not - there are enough newer hotels with the same facilities in the area.

First off must tell you how professional the staff are here. We showed up after booking on Hotels.com and they had no confirmation of our reservation. We had only done it a few hours earlier so it may not have made it to them yet but just showed them my email confirmation and it was not problem. The staff are very friendly and always say hi. The hotel itself has some good features - location excellent - indoor pool with outdoor patio. The room itself had separate bedroom with queen bed which was comfortable - no tv in bedroom. Living room had sofa which was a pullout and smaller flat screen tv. Kitchen was clean and fully equipped even with a dishwasher - fridge is older with freezer section inside the fridge itself. This is a great place for a long term stay and on wed nites you can use there bbq outside from 6-8 if you wanna grill something for dinner. Nice balcony street side with chair and a table on it. Overall exceptional value even if decor is a bit dated.

We stayed at this hotel in May 2010 & were happy with our stay, so we booked a year in advance for the 2011 Ottawa race weekend. Called in March to confirm booking & rate and found out that the rate had increased from $139 to $219 (over 50% increase) from previous yr. Strike 1.
Got a message a couple of weeks later asking to call and confirm a few details. Called back at least 3 weeks before check-in and found out reservation had been cancelled! The reservation clerk said that they had left a message saying that the reservation would be cancelled if we didnt call back and confirm ---- this was absolutely false! I had saved the one and only message that we ever rec'd and it certainly didnt say this. This was not a good sign. Strike 2.
Reservation was re-instated, but we arrived the day of the booking with apprehensions. Arrived at 1:30 and waited 30min to check in. Told that room wasnt ready and wasnt guaranteed to be ready until 4pm. Came back at 3 to check & see if room was ready yet. Found out that we hadnt actually been checked in the first time and that a room hadnt been assigned to us. The front desk staff member gave us attitude and no customer service satisfaction. Came back around 3:30 and had to wait in line another 15-20min. Told that rooms are not available until 4 (it is now 10min before 4pm!). STRIKE 3.
Finally walked away with a room key to the room type we had booked. Room was clean, kitchen was well-equiped, and location was perfect for races. Floor staff were very friendly.

There is something very wrong with the way front desk staff is handling customers. Unfortunately, this is the first impression of a hotel and tends to be what you remember most. It was absolute chaos at the front desk for the Sat race day check-in and there were many disappointed customers (like ourselves).

Excellent value for the money. Rooms are dated but clean and large. Terrific for families. The only negative was the parking garage. We could not get from one side to the other and there was NO signage ANYWHERE. We wandered around and asked for directions for at least 30 minutes. It was so frustrating.

A decent place to stay, slightly dated decor but we weren't there to sit in a hotel. It's a nice walk to almost everything you would want to see. Overnight parking for $21/night or on-street parking - free on weekends. The pool was well used after a day of walking. We found all staff to be friendly and helpful, regardless of the time or the question being asked. A separate bedroom for the kids, balcony and kitchen made the stay more enjoyable. The pull-out couch was a bit lumpy but tolerable.
