Owner description: ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

“Imagine this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

Every city should be so lucky to have this Market downtown. All the great little boutiques and so many choice for restaurants. Brothers Beer Bistro was my favorite…Outstanding food and so many choices of beers. Great wine just a small selection though.

“ByWard market changed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

SInce our last visit- the inside market has changed. The old purveyors of meats, baked goods, fresh fis,as well as cafe's, etc. have moved out into the streets in separate stores, some- blocks away- and have mad the inside less appealing. This way it is difficult to find places with your needs, and a bungle in the area, as well as difficultly finding a place to park.

“Losing its place as a market but still charming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

Byward has long been a marketplace for fresh produce from the area, but not much of that remains. Instead, the central commercial area has been taken over by a "flea market" - disheartening to see it deteriorate this way. Instead of locally grown or manufactured goods, stalls are everywhere selling trinkets and trash from overseas.

Still some heritage buildings - the condo boom is threatening but has not completely overtaken the area - and many very pleasant restaurants with patios.

“Most happening place in Ottawa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

Byward market I found bit costlier but it is worth visiting. Simply because it gives you glimpse of life of Canadians, there traditions and their interests. One thing I liked most was artists playing music on th streetand please pay something to them, seeing their dedication

“Could spend hours there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

The market is an amazing place during the summer. It has everything from fresh vegetables, fruit, plants, flowers and many shops. There are crafts, musicians, numerous restaurants of every kind. You can dine on a patio at a pub or a 5 star . All of them are good. There are unique shops that are no where else in Ottawa.
Visit the cheese shop, Mountain candy for every candy in the world .The only problem is parking as it is always so busy. It is better to park away from the market and walk . You get to see more and it is a walk worth doing so you do not miss anything.Families, friends, children, seniors there is something for everyone.Do not forget to try a Beaver tail while you are there. It has been visited by the Royal family.
