Owner description: ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

“Farmer's Market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

This is a great place to purchase vegies & fruit right from the farmer. They really put a lot of effort in to setting up colourful displays of their produce. There is a very nice restaurant to eat at either indoors or out.

“Great shopping--nice way to spend some casual, relaxed time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

By ward Market is a combination flea market, farm market, casual restaurants and fine dining. Don't miss the French Bakery there--mouth-watering goodness. There's also a NY style deli there--pleasant surprise. Fresh maple syrup, homemade jellies, crafts are available for sale. I sent handmade chocolates to my family--they loved them! Enjoy!

“Awesome market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

This market is great! They have fruit and veggies and other food, but they also have other things. There is also quite a few cool bars and restaurants with yummy food. I could be there all day, every day :D

“Another market”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

The market place was similar to any other market place. Plenty of bars and restaurants for the tourist. As with other touristy places, there were also street beggars and starving artists. Interesting market but predictable.

“One of the best markets around”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

The market is full of things to buy, both produce and crafts. i especially appreciated some of the food. We had a wonderful lunch at the Turkish food venue ( can't remember its name ). It was abundant and tasty and healthy. Also a great bakery there. i noticed lots of people ordering to take home. Great coffee. On weekends street stalls of produce line the side walk,
