Owner description: ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

“Fruit vendor smoking in front of her stall/ice cream vendor heckling clients”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

I love the market but my recent visit over the Canada Day weekend turned me off. On Canada Day my most vivid memory is a fruit vendor smoking in her stall-charming. Then I was looking for chocolate soft serve ice cream and I lined up at a trailer which advertised having it. When I got to the front of the line I was told they were out of chocolate. I started to walk away when the proprietor, a rough - looking man, commented " well excuse me" in a derogatory tone which was not necessary. This ice cream trailer was located next to the beaver tail stand. Also not all stores are wheelchair/stroller accessible. The day after Canada Day the market was a heap of garbage and filthy patios. The market should close the day after Canada Day to give them a day to clean up the mess from the festivities the night before.

“Just like an ordinary market”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

This is nothing special, just an ordinary market. Worth a visit when you have some spare time or you love markets (or you're not used to it). Only if you are looking for typical tourist stuff, you will find plenty of it here.

“Underwhelming”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

I was in Ottawa recently and was enticed by the flyers I picked up at the airport to visit Byward Market. I went there on a Saturday afternoon and I believe some sort of event for street performance was on then. The market itself sells fresh produce, flowers, trinkets and clothes in an outdoor setting and the are lots of restaurants all located there. It is a vibrant place but nevertheless it was less than what I was expecting in terms of the variety and scale. Nothing very interesting to catch my attention in any way. One word to describe it after reading all about it on the flyer and seeing it for real, underwhelming.

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013 via mobile

Everything you would want in a small area. Any type of restaurant any type of food, numerous bars, fresh veggies, fresh fruit, amazing flowers! Great shopping. Love it! Just like when we travel in Europe. We enjoyed everything that was at the market! Would definitely go again.

“Lots to see.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Always enjoy walking around there. Lots of local vendors, musicians, bars and cafe. Very historic part of Ottawa, still has that old feel to the city. Want to find some unique gifts for someone, this could be a good place.
