“Nice little gem that's free”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2011

About a thirty minute walk from downtown Ottawa (buses are available nearby) set in a beautiful area where the Governor General of Canada resides. The grounds are well taken care of and the residence is generally open for tours (closed for special events though). No photography is allowed inside the residence for security reasons but photography is allowed everywhere else. Tour guides will show you where trees have been placed by foreign dignitaries such as QEII, JFK and Nelson Mandela. Very beautiful relaxing place with benches to sit in and enjoy the 79 acre estate. I lucked out and was able to see the changing of the guard at the place.

“Grounds wonderful, tour somewhat interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2010

Though its a bit off the beaten path, visiting the very seat of Royal Canadian governance is a must for any Canadian and very interesting for others as well. The grounds are beautiful (visited at peak autumn colours), and historic (checking out the trees planted by royalty and presidents is very interesting). The tour of the residence is not the most exciting in the world, though. You only see four rooms and a good chunk of time is spent discussing every Canadian Governor-General from 1952 to the present, which unless you're a Canadian history junkee isn't extremely exciting, but the tour is somewhat interseting. Probably wouldn't do it again, but I'd say its every Canadians civic duty to visit once.

“Glad I was able to check it off my list”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2008

Seeing Rideau Hall was good, but it wasn't the best thing I did in Ottawa. The grounds were beautiful and walking around was really nice, but Rideau Hall itself was a bit of a disappointment because a lot of the area was restricted. BUT, it was definitely very exciting being in the residence of the Governor General.
