“Decent hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2006

We just came back from a weekend stay at the Delta. It was kind of disappointing. Found the room to be average: 1 queen size bed, tv, coffee maker, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, hook-up to internet for $9.95/day, usual small samples of shampoo, conditioner and lotion (cranberry scent). There was one white terry clothed robe in closet except that there were two of us in the room.

Bed needs to be updated, found it lumpy. Room was set too high 25C. If you don't look too closely at room, it's decent otherwise you might be a little disappointed. It needs upkeep. We paid $128 CAD/night. We didn't need their indoor parking, which is $17 CAD/night (self-parking with in/out priviledges). Lucky for us it was a holiday weekend and street meter parking was free.

Staff were courteous and friendly. Our room was on the ninth floor and faced west so we got a decent view of the Ottawa River.

We were able to walk to the Parliament Building 10 minutes. However it's uphill for the Parliament building. Close to the Sparks St mall, but because it was Easter weekend, 95% of the shops here were closed.

Byward Market is about a 20 minutes walk from the hotel. If you do plan to take your car to the Byward Market area, do pay attention to street signage we saw cars being towed away and some motorists getting tickets for stopping and blocking street traffic from flowing.

Able to walk to other attractions that were close by. But you have to love to walk, may not be suitable for those have heart conditions or small children.

Would probably pick a hotel closer to the attractions upon next visit.

Stayed at the Delta Ottawa for three days in early September. We received a discounted rate on our room because we were part of a large wedding-related group booking (we paid just under $100 each night). To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't pay much more to stay here under normal circumstances, given that this was a typical Delta hotel - nothing special.

The staff were very courteous and pleasant, the rooms clean and well-appointed. The bed was comfortable and had a nice duvet cover. The bathroom was a good size as well. The room itself wasn't terribly big (a bit small compared to other Deltas I've stayed in) but we found there to be sufficient space for the 2 of us.

Sparks Lounge on the main floor has a relaxed, elegant atmosphere with a good menu and varied selection of wine, beer and other spirits. But pricey!

The elevator was terribly slow - we would find ourselves waiting upwards of 5 minutes sometimes. Being on the 10th floor, it was hard to take the stairs in lieu of.

Note to travellers with children - the hotel is located directly across the street from a strip club. There were often drunken businessmen stumbling out of there later in the evenings. Hotel also has a waterslide; we found it to be extremely busy most of the time. The kids were obviously enjoying it.

The location of the hotel is also not the greatest - it's pretty much on the cusp of being considered downtown and is a good hike from the major shopping areas and restaurants near the Rideau Centre and the Byward Market. But it is very close to Parliament Hill, a must-see for first time visitors to Ottawa. OC Transpo bus service has stops very close to the hotel and the buses run frequently until about 10pm.

Parking also didn't come cheap, but this is likely because many commuters from the suburbs park here for work and the hotel knows it can get away with this. But we got in and out priviledges, which was nice.

Nice, quiet hotel, but would probably stay somewhere more central next time. If this isn't a huge concern for you, then Delta Ottawa is a good pick.
