“Solid service and delicious burgers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

The best burgers in the city, for meatitarians and vegetarians alike! Veggie options include portobello mushroom cap burgers or a veggie patty- both are very good. The sweet potato fries here are among the best I've had, never greasy and always fresh.

Service is good, even when they are very busy. You might wait for a table at peak times, but it's worth it.

“Worth a visit. Nicely done up”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Had the burger for lunchbut my wife had something else so the choice is these. We ate at the Bank street location.. Its all fine. Probably better with lots of friends in the evening..Perhaps just possibly its a $ or so overpriced but the meals were good and i would visit a 3rd time if we wanted to. I still remember the burger from the Canal cafe but not this one.

“A concept restaurant — and is that always good?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

There were lineups before 6 p.m., the other Saturday — evidence of the enormous popularity of the restaurants in this chain. WE were warned a 25-minute wait, but managed to get table in 15. The place is efficient in its own exuberant way. Yes, it would be easier for the customers if The Works took reservations, but since this is essentially a glorified hamburger joint — some might say a hamburger joint with pretensions — perhaps first-come-first-serve works best. Indeed, it gives the establishment a unique word-of-mouth reputation — "it's a great place but be prepared to wait" — which certainly hasn't injured the business of Pinks and John 'O Groats in Los Angeles or Sears Pancake house in San Francisco, three celebrated eating places which don't take reservations either.
Still, one comes away from a meal at The Works with the nagging suspicion that the huge and sometimes eccentric selection of toppings is the restaurant's big claim to fame rather than the actual ground meat. The beef in my burger was of obviously high quality, well cooked (no rare meat here) and reasonably flavorful. But without the particular topping (gouda cheese, fresh avocado, bacon) I ordered, I would have been acutely aware that the meat was rather dry.
The tower of onion rings we ordered as an appetizer was freshly prepared and the two dips were excellent. I ordered sweet potato French fries as my side and they were first rate, as was the pitcher of amber beer ordered for all of us.
Service was cheerful and responsive but scarcely polished. Tablecloths were of coarse paper, and some of the restaurant's idiosyncrasies seemed overdone — i.e. mediocre coffee served in pyrex measuring cups.
It is not a place where friends can conduct a comfortable conversation. It is excessively noisy and the music from the loudspeakers contributes further to the din. A lot of patrons do enjoy this kind of ambience, but many do not.
The bottom line: The Works concept has a lot of plus factors — beginning with the overwhelming and genuinely imaginative choice of garnishes. There is genuine attentiveness to the over-all preparation of the food. But let's be honest: it is basically a fast-food restaurant with aspirations to be taken more seriously than that. a further way of helping it succed in this vision of itself is to price it above and beyond the McDonald's crowd, so beware: a party of three can end up spending close to $100 with tip.

“Great service, fun concept, food has become average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

Years ago, the quality of food was much better...now that they are a chain things are not as good. That being said, the service is always great and it is a really fun place to go. Be prepared to wait to get in, as this is a very popular place.

“A good restaurant but not always a great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

This truly is a good restaurant and the food is really well done. What detracts from the experience is their unwillingness to take a reservation which can result in a long wait, and impatient waiters who seem to want to push you through so they can get onto the next diner. If I had lines like the Works I wouldn't take reservations either and risk no-shows and empty tables but it would be nice if the wait staff was a little more polished and less frantic.
