“Good food, watch the wine prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2011

Food and service were quite enjoyable. My big issue is with the wine list.

It's one of those winelists where very little is from LCBO so you're never sure what sort of mark-up they add. The 2 or 3 I recognized from LCBO had about a 200% mark-up (three times the LCBO price). That's not unusual, but I feel much better about prices that are pegged with about 150% mark-up.

So then I noticed "7 Deadly Zins" on the list. This is a $25 bottle that is usually not available in Vintages (LCBO). It's on the menu for $85 - a staggering 240%.

The pun is absolutely intended - that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

“Pleasant dinner in downtown Oakville.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2010

We ate inside this month. It is a bit loud but they also had a live guitarist who provided a nice sound without intruding into your dinner. The tables and set up with ok but the small sign on each table thanking people for multiple restaurant nominations in the local paper was tacky, bordering on sad.

We ordered the mixed appetizer which including fondue, grilled tiger shrimp, guacamole, chilled marlin/salmon and bruscetta. It was a very good introduction to the restaurant and nothing disappointed.

For dinner we had the gnocci and the lamb osso bucco. The gnocci is made in-house and was very light. You can choose your sauce. The osso bucco of lamb was a nice change. It came with polenta and rapini and a decent value for $25.

They have a wide variety of desserts and the two we had were above average. One was a dulche du leche crepe and the other was a vanilla tart with rasberry gelato.

I don't normally discuss the service but the waiter we had was very attentive and I thought he did an excellent job.

There are a lot of decent restaurants in downtown Oakville and we enjoy trying new ones each time. This is one of the few we will make a point to return.

“We will not be returning”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

After a quite successful (small) meal on the patio a few weeks ago, we returned last evening to probably the worst meal we have had in a long time. We ordered 3 dishes and half L. of wine - all to share. The first course of seafood crepe swimming in a green liquid was presented wih an extra plate but not even a spoon to split the dish. The salad looked tired and unattractive with a very sweet dressing. With all the fresh produce available at this time of year, it was inexcusable and we didn't finish it. The third item of pulled pork empanadas had pork so mushy it was tastless and the inside of the casing uncooked. The wine at $26 for half L. was rough. The patio was far from busy when we arrived and the kitchen was definitely not under pressure.

“Julia has left the building”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2009

We used to love Julia's as well. The service and food were fantastic; wtih great ambiance. However since opening her new restaurant in Milton; Julia has poached her head chef and much of the staff for the new location. She has cut the number of servers to a bare minimum and the assistant chef is not up to the culinary job. You can tell the kitchen staff are fighting with the waitstaff over poor food preparation; the hostility in the air is palpable. Our last visit was indeed our last visit.

“Bronte couple”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2008

We tried this restaurant for the second time. First time was terrible but we figured give Julias a second chance. We ordered the duck which was inedible. We sent it back and the chef agreed. Gave new meaning to the term "rubber duckie". Service was at best indifferent. So many great restaurants in downtown Oakville don't waste your money here.
