Looking forward to an evening with good friends, we were sadly disappointed by the service and quality of food that this restaurant had to offer. We make our own italian pasta and appreciate the quality of fine products. Unfortunately, Ritorno came up short: the lasagna was similar to a frozen take-out meal and tasted microwaved; the sphaghetti might as well have been of a store-bought brand and the meatballs were like bricks, tasting more like meatloaf. Succulent meatballs should be moist and tender, usually made with veal. The sauce had a bite to it - it was not sweet nor rounded in flavour. Even our kids didn't like it- what kid says no to spaghetti and meatballs?!
Most disappointing was the gnocchi - we would be ashamed to even call it that (in fact, the server didn't even know how to pronounce it). To boot, the lemon 'frozen ice' (we were unsure as to why they are not calling it gelato) was extremely sour and our coffees and lattes were served luke warm. Both my husband and I felt sick afterwards as the food was repeating on us.
In addition, we didn't appreciate being charged 17% gratuity with a group of 8 (bill split in half- 2 groups of 4) - we find this offensive as we are excellent tippers but forcing a 17% tip results in just that and a bad taste in our mouths.
I would be embarrassed to call Ritorno an italian restaurant - Is this the best they can do?!
All in all, we do not recommend this restaurant - even to the mangiacakes - and we will not be 'returning'.
