It should be noted that this review is for the restaurant portion of the Inn only.
The atmosphere is very nice, with a lot of warm lighting and old world charm. The place is well maintained and seemed well managed. Unfortunately for us it seemed a little pretentious. We've been to NOTL many many times, and even stayed at the Charles one weekend (which was mixed for us) and we wanted to give this place another shot. We walked in and they asked us if we had reservations, but the place had literally two couples. All the other tables were empty, so I asked if reservations were necessary, to which they replied, "usually." The host said he'd "see what he could do" but to save time and trouble (we were hungry!) we just offered to sit in the lounge even though the dining room was virtually empty. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, figuring the tables would fill up as the night went on. I had a peak on my way to the ladies room an hour and a half later and there were still quite a few tables empty.
Service was really, really slow. Twenty minutes just to get some water. Maybe it's because we sat in the lounge? The whole time we just felt uncomfortable. For some reason it just felt like we were treated as less important (was it because we are younger? because we were sitting in the lounge? Who knows!)
Having said all that I am still giving this place 3 stars because the food is quite good. It’s always fresh, hot and delicious and generally excellent. The problem is the prices are a bit inflated. The menu in the lounge is much more economical than the dining room (but you can still order from either menu) unfortunately it just doesn’t seem worth the trouble. I don’t think we’ll be going back unless the service changes.
