Played Royal Niagara over the weekend for a discounted rate through golfnow.com. Despite the recent wet conditions the course was in good condition although it was cart path only for the buggy.
Clubhouse and practice facilities
Clubhouse is welcoming with lovely views over the course, there is a restaurant on the upper floor and a cafe/half way house downstairs next to the pro shop. There is an excellent practice facility with range, putting green, practice chipping green with bunkering.... All great for you to prepare to go out on the course.
Course has three sets of 9 holes. I played the Iron Bridge and the Escarpement. First impression when you see the course is... Wow pretty open with not many trees, this looks like a good scoring course!
How wrong I was. The lack of mature trees is more then made up for by strategically placed bunkering/ditches/lakes/tall grass and the rough is very penal for a stray tee shot!
The greens are really what makes the course tough though. Considering the winter we have had and the recent rain the greens were fast, tough to read with many subtle breaks that were hard to see....
If you play there; select which tee's you play carefully, if you make the right choice you will have a great day... but remember your hard work starts when you get on the greens!
