“Like a Paris boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

Merlot House reminded us of a delightful Paris boutique hotel where my husband and I stayed a few years ago. There is careful attention to every comfort .

The detailed review of June 24 (Toronto Travelbuff) was excellent in expressing our thoughts of this B & B and its gracious hosts, Shirley and Mike McBride. They truly enjoy people and sharing their lovely home.

We had needlessly been a little concerned when the only room available was the smaller of the three, the Chardonnay, with a queen bed. As we are accustom to a king, we wondered about our quality of sleep. With the comfortable mattress and the quality bedding we had a good rest. Unlike the Paris hotel, we appreciated the sheet provided along with the duvet.

As we had a late lunch before arrival, we only wanted a light snack before the evening performance at the Theatre. Shirley's recommendation of the outdoor patio of the local golf course was a good one. We liked the casual atmosphere as we sat overlooking the water and shaded by a large tree.

We will plan a longer visit next time to Merlot House and this area.

My daughter and I just returned from an overnight stay at Merlot House after seeing a Shaw Festival matinee. We have visited Niagara on the Lake for more than fifteen years and stayed in many bed and breakfasts. Merlot House is at the top of the scale! Host Shirley McBride was welcoming, professional and thoughtful. She offered duvets for our air-conditioned bedroom but the temperature was perfect. The rooms were beautifully decorated consistent with the architecture of the house. The furniture, artwork and prints reflected the McBride family's extensive traveling abroad. We appreciated the comfortable twin beds and high quality linens and towels. The mandarin oranges in our room and Keurig coffee and teas in the guest pantry were a lovely surprise. Our breakfast included fresh fruit, yoghurt, home baked banana-apple-nut bread, French toast with orange butter, maple syrup and baked ham slices. Everything was delicious and attractively presented including an edible flower. We hope to return next summer to stay again at Merlot House. Many thanks, Shirley, for making our stay memorable!

Room Tip: Dinner at Ravine Winery was good but not outstanding. Next time we will try Ginger Restaurant as Shi...

My friend and I stayed three nights at the Merlot House. The entire experience was truly enjoyable. Mike and Shirley made every effort to make sure our stay as comfortable as possible. Shirley even broke out her winter gloves and hats to share with us for our bike ride on an un-seasonably cold day.
Mike and Shirley have an eye for detail. This was evident in the room decor, the dining room, the living room and the gardens. Unfortunately, we were not able to take in the comfort of the porch rocking chairs and the back patio because the weather was not cooperating, hopefully next time. Mike graciously offered the garage to us for our bike storage which we swiftly took him up on.
Each morning we had a hot breakfast served promptly at 9 am in the dining room using linen table cloths and napkins. The conversation around the dining room table was always lively. Mike and Shirley made sure all guests were introduced properly.
Shirley assisted in making dinner reservations, providing brochures of things to do and coupons for discounts at the winery's. She was always there, quick to lend assistance.
I would definitely plan another visit to the Merlot House.

The Merlot House was beautiful, immaculate, warm and friendly. We enjoyed our weekend stay! My Son & Daughter-in-law stayed in one room and my husband and I in another room, both rooms were beautifully decorated and really comfortable. Breakfast was really special; it started both days with fruit, one day fresh fruit with cream or yogurt on top, the second morning started with a bake fruit dish. That was just the start! We have wonderful blueberry pancakes with sausage the first day and great baked egg dish the second. Even my husband, who likes just the basics, loved the breakfast.
There are lots of funs things to do at Niagara on the Lake and Mike and Shirley advice was great!

I hesitated to write this review because I want to keep this lovely Inn available for when I want to go back! My husband and I stayed 3 nights at Merlot House. Mike and Shirley are wonderful hosts and the entire experience was just perfect. From the inspired breakfasts, to the lovely room and attention to detail I have to say it is our favorite B and B in Niagara-on-the-lake.

Room Tip: all the rooms are wonderful

The Merlot House is a warm, beautifully decorated home with generous and welcoming hosts. Shirley and Mike are seasoned travellers with lots of interesting stories to share as well as encouraging their guests to share their own experiences. Breakfast was amazing - we didn't need anything more for the day. They catered to a gluten free diet, taking it completely in stride and even gave us a gluten free flour to experiment with. We will definitely stay there again and have already recommended Merlot House to several friends.

We had a wonderful stay at this B&B. Mike and Shirley the owners looked after us very well. They also highly respected our privacy. The food was really good-down home quality but with a fanciful flare. The buckle was quite delicious! They are awesome about dietary restrictions but still making the food high quality and interestingly delicious!!! The house itself is immaculate and very comfy. They have beautiful things. The room we booked was very spacious and had all the amenities of home. Loved the bedding too! The house is a split second drive to town-too far to walk back and forth for us but maybe not everyone. But the house is very close to everything in general. The hosts were very gracious and kind. We are already planning our next trip. They are busy so call soon so you don't miss out. The value for the $$$ is remarkable compared to other properties we have visited in NOTL.

Room Tip: Merlot room has a king bed and is very nice size. Has a sitting area and fireplace.
