“Relaxing spa experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013 via mobile

Booked a spa treatment here during a recent visit to the area. Compares well with other NOTL spas. Good massage therapist and relaxing environment. Just what the doctor ordered! Would like to return and try both the restaurant and the hotel.

My husband and I recently stayed for two nights at the Oban Inn, as had always wanted to visit the lovely town of Niagara on the Lake and attend the Shaw Festival and sample some wineries. We had a deluxe room in the building adjacent to the main building, with a small terrace. That building does not have an elevator so might be a problem if cannot walk up stairs. We asked that a dresser in the hall be moved into room as none was provided. The room was immaculate, the continental breakfast was fine. Did not use any spa facilities. Had no problem with wireless internet access in the room. Did not have dinner there as we enjoyed other options. Would stay there again if I ever return to Niagara on the Lake.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Oban and we could not have been happier with our experience. We stayed for 2 nights, in a premium room.

The room was spacious, very well appointed, and the bed was incredible to sleep in. In room there were multiple pillow choices, so our sleep was one of the most comfortable to date. The room was clean, and stayed spotless during the duration of our visit. The housekeeping staff were friendly every day. Windows opened to fresh air from the lake, and the atmosphere of the rooms is one of modern comfort.

We had dinner one night in the dining room as a part of a package. What a good call that was on our part! We were able to choose three courses each, and every single one did not disappoint. The meal moved along at a great pace, and the service was attentive and friendly. The sommelier Kim made some great wine recommendations and made the mood of the meal downright perfect. Thanks Kim!!

We took advantage of adding spa to our package, and my wife had a facial and I a massage. The spa staff were literally the best we have yet to experience. Both the asthetician (Monica) and the massage therapist (Irmi) said they had been with the owner for over 15 years, saying they loved working for her because of her high standards and enthusiasm. This showed in the treatment we received. Relax is not even the word for it - we were in heaven!!

To make it a perfect weekend, we added a wine tour through the property with Denis. This was by far the highlight of our weekend. Denis brings an intoxicating zest for wine to the experience, and our 4 hours with him flew by. Even if you don't stay at this property, please take the time to book a wine tour with this man. From France, his passion for wine is so evident, and his private tours make you feel like the most special person in Niagara on the Lake. While the other tours were shuffled off buses with name tags stuck to their shirts, we exited from our Mercedes private car and did private tastings in special parts of the winery while being educated on each and every wine we tasted. And we learned that our tour was better priced than those group bus ones! Imagine!

We look forward to returning to this charming, kind property, where all of the staff put so much heart into everything. For anyone looking for a quiet place in Niagara on the Lake, we'd highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: Anything in the main inn is modern and updated. We had a room with a balcony and it was incredible!

My fiancee, dog and I spent the night after I proposed at this hotel. For anyone looking for a romantic getaway, it does not get better than this.
While out of my usual price range, I am so glad that I splurged on this inn. As soon as we got out of the car, we felt like we were in a period film. The inn is absolutely gorgeous and kept up beautifully. Our room was gorgeous and came with a romantic balcony, perfect for a light wine and cheese dinner. A great little gym and outdoor hot tub were a welcome surprise.
And the breakfast? Don't even get me started! We felt like royalty being served such fancy food.

Spent two nights here on a cross-USA trip in one of the cottage rooms. The Pros: great location in a great town and a beautiful area! Beautiful grounds/gardens. Extremely comfortable bed! Very quiet. Great massage (Thanks Lorne!). Dog friendly, and they keep dogs away from the main hotel not to bother other guests. The adequates: service (everything as it should have been but nothing exceptional), dinner (good atmosphere and service, food good but not great). The Cons: small room, bathroom needs a remodel, included breakfast was sad but acceptable in a pinch. Better to walk down the block to one of the cute breakfast places on Queen St. Overall, location and atmosphere win the day: would recommend Oban Inn and especially Niagara on the Lake to a friend

Although we live in Niagara-on-the-Lake, we take every chance we can to stay the night at the Oban Inn. If it is a special occasion or even if we are having the interior of our house painted - we stay there!

When our grandson and his fiance were looking for the perfect, romantic venue for their wedding, we suggested the Oban Inn and, happily, we celebrated the wedding there a week ago. The bride and groom were thrilled with the choice; the guests who stayed overnight were very complimentary about the decor and the cleanliness of the rooms and the included continental breakfast.

From the moment the bride and groom made their first call to book the date, to the moment they checked out after their honeymoon stay in the 'Oban Suite' every experience was rated as excellent.

The ceremony was held in a private garden completely surrounded by stunning flowers and fish ponds with floating water lilies. The wedding specialist for the Inn, Celia, was most helpful in booking a minister, arranging for the flowers for the bride and her attendants, booking a makeup artist, a post ceremony carriage ride and a very talented photographer.

Following the ceremony and a cocktail reception in a private room in the Oban House, our group booked the entire dining room solarium for the wedding dinner. It was superb. Every course was outstanding and delicious and all the service impeccable. The chef is very talented and amazingly able to feed 38 guests 4 courses with ease. The service staff worked with warm efficiency and managed to keep some very demanding guests happy.

Most of all, though, we have to extend our thanks and congratulations to the inn staff. They make the Oban Inn what it is - welcoming, accomodating and relaxing. We have to mention Robert and the Front Desk and Kim in the restaurant for their exceptional care and service.

Everyone agreed that we had made the right choice and we all had a thoroughly wonderful Oban experience!

The Oban Inn, which has a long standing good reputation, now bills itself as a boutique hotel. Unfortunately, the experience we had there recently was anything but special. We reserved the so-called Suite for one week. At check-in, we were required to pay the full amount for the entire stay, something which had never been mentioned previously. This was a huge red flag, but we foolishly ignored it. The room we got was not a suite in anything but name. In normal hotel terminology, it would be called a junior suite, as it did have a separate seating area, but there was no door/wall enclosing the bedroom as one would expect in a real suite.

The room itself was an extreme disappointment in that it lacked many amenities that one would expect from a Motel 6, let alone a high end property. The room is a very long rectangle divided approximately into thirds: seating area, bed area, bathroom. The bathroom is ridiculously large, with a tub (non-whirlpool) sitting in the middle of a vast tiled space, which also includes the toilet. However, the bathroom lacks simple things like towel racks near the double sinks. Also, the closet is off the bathroom, is miniscule in size, and has a door that does not cover the entire opening so that your clothes steam whenever you shower.

The room is cluttered with way too much furniture: 8 chairs (including one with ottoman in the bathroom) and a couch. This means that there is no usable place to put one's suitcases because all of the floor space has something on it. This is especially problematic because other than the closet in the bathroom, there is no place to store clothing -- what appears to be a dresser in the center of the sleeping area actually holds a small refrigerator, the coffee pot and the safe, but has no drawers. The only other storage spaces are a few tiny drawers in the bathroom under the sinks (perhaps 2" deep) and a couple of drawers which barely open in an old and worn-out desk.

When we asked about the lack of storage, we were assured by the owner that there were full size drawers in the bathroom under the sink. In fact, there is an empty space there, and no amount of persuading could convince her that the alleged drawers did not in fact exist.
The room is also overflowing with tacky, fake objects d'art, taking up most of the space on the various side tables. When we asked the owner to remove some of these so that we would have space for some of our articles, she was insulted, presumably because she is personally responsible for the hoard of tacky decorations. The standard response of both the owner and staff to all of our concerns was "this is a boutique hotel," as though that explained the lack of basic amenities. In fact, their attitude towards customers is exactly the opposite of what we expect and have received at genuine boutique hotels.

Finally, the hotel claims to have wireless Internet access but we got virutally no bandwidth in our room (~1 page/5 minutes!), supposedly the best in the hotel. Reception is no better in the lobby, library or any other public area we could check. A fee for Internet service would be annoying, but still would be much better than no Internet at all.

So, all in all, for about $400/night, you get a room with the closet off the bathroom, nowhere to put clothes other than that closet, no floor space on which to put an open suitcase, no Internet, and a defensive, hostile and unhelpful proprietor.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.
