This is our first foray into B&Bs in Niagara Falls, Canada although we have had B&B experiences while travelling in the UK many years ago. Our stay at Villa Gardenia was absolutely wonderful and it certainly made us wonder why we have restricted our previous stays to hotels when we visit Niagara Falls on mini vacation breaks. We found this place through browsing various B&B reviews at Trip Advisor, so we hope our comments below will convince those of you undecided travellers to stay at Villa Gardenia. We did and we certainly did not regret our decision.
My wife and I were making a trip to Niagara Falls to visit the vineyards (in early December) to stock up on wine and decided to take a mini break. We have always wondered what those quaint and exotic looking B&Bs along Niagara River road would offer. So, on a little bit of an impusle, I decided to surprise my wife by picking a B&B instead of the Hilton or Sheraton. I reviewed many other B&Bs and although they all looked very nice and had many good reviews, I selected Villa Gardenia based on the great comments about the hosts, Anna and Tony. There are however a few other features that make this Villa a little different from other B&Bs. First, the property is located in a very quiet spot just off River road so traffic noise would not be an issue at night. Besides having 4 beautiful guest rooms, the villa offers a private entrance ( as advertised) for the guests so they can come and go without disturbing the owners who I presume have their own private wing within the property. Also, the dining room has 4 separate breakfast tables whch offer guests some degree of privacy especially for those "non-morning" people who just want to shake off the morning blues after too many glasses of great Niagara wine or after long tiring days of touring the region.
As far as our stay goes, Anna met us on arrival and showed us the villa and our room and answered any questions we had. She was very welcoming but yet politely respectful of guests' time and privacy. We stayed in the Venice room which was very spacious and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable and so was the sofa love seat where one can relax by the electric fireplace (we did not use as weather was relatively warm) and watch TV or DVDs which are thoughtfully provided by the owners. The ensuite private bathroom is cozy and all amenities (soap, shampoo, towels, mats, etc are provided). The shower was excellent with great nozzle pressure compared to "drips" of some hotel rooms. Hairdryer, however was not included in the room but I think the website mentioned that this will be provided on request. There is a fridge just outside in the hallway for guests and Anna was again thoughtful in leaving two bottles of water which was much appreciated as we were really thirsty after a long day out. As it is Winter and low season, we were the only guests in the villa so it was very quiet and peaceful. We had the most restful night which I must add is not always possible in hotels where unruly and loud guests will often spoil your sleep and hence the day ahead.
We had breakfast at just after 8 a.m. and Anna (who had provided us with a choice of hot breakfast items when we arrived), made us a very delicious meal of french toast, bacon, fresh fruits with coffee and orange juice. There were also muffins which we did not eat as breakfast was sumptuous enough. We sat at the best table by the bay window overlooking what must have been a great looking garden (with Koi pond) in summer. Our host Anna, also provided us with free wine tasting passes to local wineries, which again goes to show that the small thoughtful touches set this B&B apart from the mainstream hotels. At our request, Anna also gave us a tour of the other rooms in the Villa and they were each, in their own way, very charming and lovingly decorated.
We have not experienced other B&Bs in Niagara Falls and therefore can't provide a comparison, but with the beautiful Villa Gardenia and the warm welcome by the host, why bother?
Thanks Anna and we defintely will return to Villa gardenia on our next trip to Niagara Falls.
John and Suzie
P.S. Most importantly, my wife really enjoyed the stay and surprise!
