To celebrate our first anniversary, Brenda & I decided to spend a weekend in historic Kingston, Ontario. After considerable searching, we chose the Summer House Inn as our accommodations during our stay. The B & B offered a very central location and seemed to be an ideal spot for a romantic getaway. When I reserved the room, I made it clear an ensuite bathroom was a must and asked if they could work out something for breakfast to suit Brenda's wheat & gluten intolerance. Neither of these points posed a problem to the hostess, Joan Meaney. We agreed upon a rate of $ 150.00per night and the room was booked. Upon arriving at the B & B on Friday afternoon, Joan asked about our breakfast preferences and had completely forgotten about Brenda's food allergies. After reminding her she said she could provide fruit and yogurt and scrambled eggs and ham. Brenda requested de-caf coffee for herself. Joan then brought us to our room and showed us the bathroom located in the hall outside our room. When we pointed out that we had reserved a room with an ensuite bath Joan said she had just rented out her last room with an ensuite to a couple that had checked in earlier. She suggested we could use her room which, although it didn't have an ensuite bath, was isolated from the rest of the inn with access to a large private bathroom. If that didn't suit us, we could try to find something elsewhere! Knowing that there were very few, if any, vacancies available, we accepted to use her room and stay at Summer House. The next morning, at breakfast, there was a glass of grapefruit juice, a small fruit cup and some low fat yogurt on the table as well as various muffins and pastries. There was one urn of coffee on the sideboard. When we asked if there was de-caf available, we were informed the urn contained only de-caf. I, for one, like my caffeine in the morning but had no choice but to drink what was available. No effort was made to see if I or the other guests would have preferred regular coffee. Some of of would have preferred orange juice to grapefruit juice and regular yogurt to low fat but no options were available. The scrambled eggs and ham soon followed and the eggs were well prepared and tasty but the ham was a little dry. Joan then informed us she would be away for the rest of our stay, but that her husband and some other person would look after us. Brenda and I went out for the day and, when we returned at 3:50 PM, we were greeted at the door by the other person who requested we return after 4:00 to check in. We explained we were already registered and were then allowed inside. We went up to our room to find that our bed hadn't been made and realized we were going to have to do it ourselves. On Sunday morning we decided to forego the Summer House breakfast and went to eat at Pan Choncho instead.
All in all, this is a beautiful building that is perfectly located in the heart of downtown Kingston. If the hosts could learn to listen to their guests and maybe go the extra mile for special requests, the place would be full all the time. For the price we were charged, I felt the services provided left a lot to be desired. Too bad, but I won"t be going back.
