“Hotel has Good and Bad points”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

Once upon a time, I assume, this hotel, maybe under a different name, was the queen of the Kingston waterfront. Now there are several dotted along - and blocking, I have to point out, the views of the lake. The Confederation Place Hotel building is very much of its time, I would guess the early 1980s from the architecture - it even has what used to be a fern bar, although now the plants are all plastic. In its favour - our room had certainly been renovated not too long ago and was clean and comfortable. As usual you notice the short cuts - the old tiles and ceiling in the bathroom. In common with many other hotels, the bathroom did not seem to have a vent, and fogged up very quickly. The foyer has also been done over, and the area near the elevator on our floor. The other passageways seem to be with original décor. We had a great view over the lake. The free continental breakfast was acceptable, and protein in the form of hard-boiled eggs was available. The breakfast area was the aforementioned fern bar area. This breakfast is currently the only food offered in the hotel at the moment. The very large dining room, overlooking the lake, was not in use. I wonder if they have thought about getting an outside restaurant operator to take it over? I asked the staffer at breakfast if they had thought of getting one of those waffle makers in. She said they used to have one, but the students had burned it out! That is one of the downsides - rooms are rented out to Queen's University students, which can add to the noise level on occasion. However, we found the price very reasonable, and the location is perfect for exploring downtown Kingston with good restaurants in easy reach. The $15 charge for parking is a bit annoying, but there is cheaper parking across the road. I don't understand, BTW, why rooms with two double beds are cheaper than those with queen or king. If it is a double bedded room we each take one, if queen or king we share. Doesn't that make more washing and bedmaking for the staff?

Room Tip: The view over the lake is spectacular.

This is a typical hotel with modern amenities. The rooms are good. The best part about this hotel is its location - right on the waterfront and within walking distance of anything you'd like to see or do downtown.

i thought this hotel was very nice, friendly staff. i was upgraded to a lake view which was awesome! room was in need of a little TLC but hey it was clean and that's the main thing. my only complaint about this hotel is the 15$ per car parking. i was unaware of it until check in so got stuck with an extra 30$ on my bill. id return to this hotel.

We book a Queen Room with 2 Queen beds through Booking.com and when we checked in, this hotel didn't have the decency or respect to tell us that they were giving us a Double Room with 2 Double beds. When we found out, we called the reception and told that it was an upgrade. How can 2 double beds be an upgrade from 2 queen beds. The commode had black (literally black) stains and we had to call to get it done. The put bleach and cleaned it as much as they could. You could see that the bottom of the commode, on the inside, was corroded. Anyways, the Reception and the Manager thought by giving us a discount on the room would solve the issue. They didn't consider that I probably booked the Queen Room for a reason...it was my desire and choice. No respect for one's choice. Unfortunately, we could not get a booking in any other hotel in the vicinity, so were forced to stay that night in that room. 4 people on double beds was extremely uncomfortable. The next night they put us in the room we had originally asked for. Believe me, this room was far bigger and roomier that the one they called an upgrade the previous night. But, this room had a batch tub that was discolored with dark brown stains. This hotel needs serious renovations. It's far below standard. I don't recommend this to any one. Today when we checked out, they bungled up on the 'discounts' they promised. The discount was not what I wanted but since they offered it and I did go through inconvenience, I had to make them re-work the bill.

A note to the management: The customer is not always looking for discounts and no matter how much of a discount you give, can make up for the customer's desire to live in a room of their choice. Do it right.

Room Tip: Make 100% sure the room you are given is the room you booked.

Having read reviews for the Confederation, I expected less. The room was inexpensive (< $100), and clean, and the beds were comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfast was ok, nothing over the top, but edible enough and the coffee was good. The view of the harbour was a nice bonus, and the hotel location was perfect for the event we attended. Would stay here again without reservation. We parked inside for an extra $15, and with the snow storm that hammered Kingston overnight, it was a fortuitous choice. Alternate public parking arrangements are available across the street at a cheaper rate. Overall excellent value.

Room Tip: You won't regret a room with a view of the harbour.

This hotel is located right in the center of Kingston, in front of the lake, which is very convenient.

My room was clean and my bed was comfortable.
But the entire hotel does need a renovation.

Breakfast was included (cereal, bread, bagels, brownies, eggs, yogurt, and juice), Internet was free, and service was very friendly.

Not a bad place overall, but tired look.

Room Tip: If you pay extra, your bedroom could face the lake. I didn't... and my window faced a parking l...
