We recently flew up to Hamilton watch some golf at the 2012 Canadian Open and play some ourselves. Using recent reviews on Trip Advisor we chose the comparatively new Best Western C hotel which apparently is a new brand of boutiques hotels that Best Western plans to launch worldwide. It turned out to be a good choice and not just because we got an extremely good rate for a four day stay.
On the afternoon we flew up a small area of Hamilton suffered record breaking rainfall in a very short period of time, including as we found out, our hotel. Arriving three hours later because of being diverted to London (Ontario) to wait out the storm we found the lobby covered in towels and the staff cheerily cleaning up what had been an inch of rain that had seeped in through the glass windows that form the wall of the entranceway. Taking into account that our flight had been very rough and that the restaurant where we were counting on for a nice meal had just closed, this looked like a real bummer of a start to our trip. Not so.
The staff were so unabashed by the events of the day and so friendly that we immediately felt bad for them having to put in so much extra work getting the place mopped up and presentable ( and it should be noted there was no carpet in the lobby so no lingering mustiness). Noting that the restaurant was now closed the reception staff pointed to a cooler with prepared lasagne from the restaurant that could be heated in our room and, wonder of wonders, wine for sale to go with it. We had a delicious meal with red wine on the go within minutes of checking in.
Each of the rooms at C has a name based on an Italian theme. On Floor 5 each room is named for someone in the movie business, on Floor 4 the entertainment business and Floor 3 – others, while on Floor 2 the rooms are named for Italian provinces and cities. We were in the Lombardi suite which was somewhat ironic for Vikings fans, but we didn’t mind Vince’s triumphant grin staring at us, at least not too much.
The room was a perfect square with very good utilization of space. Included were an in-room sparkling clean Jacuzzi and a fireplace, both of which were not needed in the dog days of summer, but would be welcome in winter. All of the necessary modern electronics such as 42 inch TV, Wifi and DSL connection were available and worked without problems. The king bed had a great mattress and even better pillows. The pool area and hot tub look very inviting and there is a roof top patio from which you can see Lake Ontario.
Lest one thinks we are shills for this hotel, there were a few small, but annoying things that detracted from our stay, some of which could be easily corrected. Firstly, the shower stall has no place to put soap, shampoo etc. so it must be put on the floor – no fun. Secondly, despite having a microwave there is no cutlery or crockery. Staff was good enough to raid the restaurant the first night we were there to get some, but this is a serious oversight. Lastly, and this is a complaint about just about every hotel – is it not possible in this day and age to get air conditioning that does not turn itself off just a the desired temperature is reached and then blast into a whirlwind of sound as the temperature inevitably rises again, waking the attempted sleeper time and again.
A few closing comments – you need a car to stay here. It is conveniently located if your interest is in the many things to see and do on the top side of the Niagara escarpment and it is closer to the airport than downtown. However, if you really, really have to stay in downtown Hamilton and we feel sorry if you do, this is not the place.
Also we would be remiss in not mentioning Gramma Willie’s which appeared hidden among the usual chains that clog the back of every hotel Guest Directory. It was an old-fashioned diner not far from the hotel that served good food at really good prices. The egg burger with bacon was excellent as was the cup of joe that came with it, all for $4.75. Inexplicably the next day we were drawn by the siren call of the Tim’s across the street from Gramma Willie’s and were treated to having four out of our five order choices delivered incorrectly. As I munched on something I hadn’t ordered and didn’t like and sipped on my coffee with unrequested sugar I looked over to Gramma’s and felt like saying “Doh”.
