I've been to many shows at the River Run. The expansive lobby area is beautiful and bright, with high ceilings and lots of glass, floor to ceiling. The view of the river is quite pretty and you can walk out to a balcony overlooking the river or even walk out to a viewing to watch the ducks and geese on the water and admire the beautiful old homes across the river. When you walk into the theatre itself, it's just a beautiful space. I don't think there's a truly bad seat in the place, either on orchestra or balcony level. Staff and volunteers are very welcoming and helpful. Order beer, wine, coffee, juices or soft drinks, cookies, ice cream. Only water allowed in the theatre itself.
A special touch: try to visit the River Run at Christmas time when decorated Christmas trees fill the common spaces on 3 levels - it's a charity fundraiser. It costs nothing, you can go in anytime the theatre is open for a show. But, it's best to go when it's getting dark outside, to appreciate the gorgeous show of lights. You can just admire, but if so moved, put coins into jars to vote for your favourite tress, thus contributing to raising charitable funds.
The only drawback is parking on site. But there is a large parking garage across the street, which you enter around the corner, on MacDonnell St. Street parking after five is free and also free for 2 hours once a day during business hours. If you can help it, don't pay to park in the tiny, private lot across the street at the lights. It costs a lot more and by walking just a few extra steps, you can have parking on a nearby street or in the parking ramp.
