“Stay Here for the Beautiful Room - But Skip Their Breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2007

The Custom's House Inn was absolutely beautiful - with very attractively restored rooms. Our room had a high ceiling and a lovely fireplace. One wall of the room was brick.

I agree with previous reviewers that the innkeeper was not the doting type. The "office" was closed most of the time.

The atmospheric pub in the basement was the location for a woefully inadequate breakfast. When we came down to breakfast - less than a half hour after the breakfast room opened - there was no longer any juice available. We had to search for cups for coffee since all of the cups had already been used. We found paper coffee cups in a cabinet. There was no creamer or milk for the coffee. There was a long line of cereal boxes to choose from. The one that I chose was virtually empty. There was also bread to toast and a few pieces of fruit in a bowl.

The Inn is in a very convenient location for exploring the waterfront, the shops, and for restaurants. It is also walking distance from the deCoste Center where we attended a fantastic music production.

Stay here, but eat breakfast elsewhere!

The Custom's House Inn has been beautifully restored, and made into a very attractive B&B. The rooms are spotlessly clean and very large. The furnishings are in keeping with the "period" feel of the house. It is a very attractive property. We particularly enjoyed the marble fireplace and 14 foot ceiling in our room. That said, I will agree with a previous reviewer that the place is somewhat cold and impersonal. The host is attentive and helpful, however he is not the doting type -- which is perfectly fine for our taste. The very handsome pub in the basement is now used only as a place to serve an adequate but modest breakfast. The Inn is located in a very convenient spot --- very short walking distance ( 2 - 6 blocks ) from many restaurants and downtown Pictou. The ferry to PEI is no more than a 15 minute drive from the Inn. We enjoyed the special charm of the Custom's House Inn and would return again on another trip to Pictou.

  • Liked — Extremely clean property. Charming period feel
  • Disliked — nothing

I did quite a bit of research before staying at this inn, so I was fairly confident we would like it. The description I read talked about a charming old customs house on the waterfront with a pub in the basement that had Celtic entertainment. But, this isn't what we found: The pub had closed down, and the inn itself was totally devoid of character and life. To be fair, it was orderly and the rooms clean and comfortable; the host was pleasant and efficient enough, although we saw him only twice, when we checked in and then again at breakfast when we paid.
But, this place seemed just like a hotel; impersonal and with none of the charming qualities that (in my opinion) make a stay memorable, and why we opt for B&Bs over hotels. We never saw any other quests (and this was August!); the place seemed like a ghost inn.
The breakfast provided was mediocre (some store bought bread, jams, cereal and horrible coffee, Yuk).
Under new management, this inn could become a gem, but I would look elsewhere, the Consulate Inn, or the Auberge Walker Inn.

The room was magnificient, service was out of the ordinary as we had special requirements for our laptop connection. Just fantastic! Our room had about 12 foot ceilings, a full marble fireplace, beautiful wood floors and plush robes strewn across the bed upon arrival. The pub/breakfast nook downstairs takes you back to old Scotland. You will love your stay here!
