“Excellent Food and Service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

We had an excellent experience during our visit to the Wooden Monkey.
We had been touring Nova Scotia for two weeks and this was our last day.
We are vegetarians and we had been having a very hard time finding food
to eat -- let alone good food. Our meal here was excellent. You don't need
to be a vegetarian to eat here; in fact, most of the menu is not. However,
all of the dishes are creative, many are healthy and organic. (You can also get
a gourmet hamburger here, if the orgnaic, healthy part scares you!) It is
reasonably priced and the service was very friendly, even though we arrived at a
busy time.

“Miserable experience.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013 via mobile

We arrivied in Halifax and had plans to meet some friends at The Wooden Monkey, based on reviews here. The four of us stopped at Propeller first, a local brewery a few blocks away, and did a tour before dinner.

We arrived and my husband and I went to the restrooms; while we were in there, a lady outside accidentally turned off the lights on us both (!) and my husband was locked in, as it was pitch black and the door slides rather than swinging open. Finally a grim-faced waiter comes over tto assist just as my husband opens the door and gives him a sour look. This part is important later, folks, so bear with me.

We go to our table and our waiter comes over. It's the same waiter who'd come to the bathroom earlier, unimpressed with my husband's attempt to get out of the restroom. He asks how we are and I mention we're great, first day of vacation and we've just left a brewery tour and come for dinner. The waiter looks at us and says that, as we've now informed him that we're "ineibriated", the restaurant is now responsible for our behaviour and thus he can no longer serve us. I explain we don't intend to drink, we'd just like dinner and we promise to be a delightful table. He says it doesn't matter, he can't serve us and we need to leave. Wow. (Incidentally, I'm a paralegal and familiar with this legislation; let's say his interpretation is ... broad.)

We left and felt pretty insulted and disappointed. We weren't being loud or obnoxious - just jovial and friendly. I suspect the waiter thought we were going to be troublesome and thought he'd take an opportunity to turf us out rather than deal with it.

(We went to the Harbour City restaurant at the Delta Halifax and had a terrific dinner with lots of wine and a charming waitress.)

So, let this be a lesson to you. Despite Nova Scotia's reputation for great friendly service, you'll meet the polar opposite at The Wooden Monkey. Stay away. Don't bother. Lots of other places will make you feel welcomed over a great meal.

“Healthy Cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

The menu suggests healthy prepared entrees and mains. I sampled the fish chowder; good but scallops were hard and overcooked. The arctic char main dish was a success in flavor and just rightly grilled to perfection. The wine menu selection is very limited; better off with beer. Service was attentive.

“Awesome Arctic char!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

This place has a unique everything - atmosphere, decor, menu, choice of ingredients - heck, even the taps in the bathroom operate in a way you wouldn't expect! My Arctic char was truly fantastic. Waitress was very accommodating with kids fussiness and allergy limitations. I'd have given it five stars if it weren't for the "quirky" service. It almost seems that professional service doesn't quite happen in quirky places which is unfortunate. It wasn't at all bad, just a bit off putting especially for the price.

“A Hike Worth Taking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

The Wooden Monkey takes a thigh-pounding hike to reach, way up Prince Street, nearly to the Citadel overlooking Halifax’s harbor. But who could not ke easily to a place staffed by a black-clad waiter called Batman and that bills itself, credibly enough, as “the restaurant with a conscience?” The Wooden Monkey ranks high among Halifax, Nova Scotia’s more admired eateries, for a relaxed unfussy demeanor and not least for tolerable prices. Like other top restaurants in Halifax, the Monkey specializes in seafood—like our fish cakes and a chickpea salad for appetizers, and for entrèes, Digby scallops with almonds and a seafood chowder with mussels, haddock, lobster, scallops, potatoes and zero dairy. We got out for $104, including wine and Batman’s tip.
