We booked the Waverley because it looked kitsch and fun ... antique-tastic. Silly us. We stayed here on two separate nights in early September.
The first night we were in a room tucked away in the back of a newish annexe. It also seemed to be partially underground, with a tiny high-up window mostly blocked by the world's noisiest air conditioning unit. The room was cramped but clean and the bathroom was fine. Breakfast was very nice, with lovely bacon, pancakes and maple syrup. So far so good (if very pricey at $200 for the night.
Second night was awful. We were on the third-and-a-half floor this time (yes, I know - all a bit Stephen King), in the P T Barnum room (apparently he stayed there at some point). There was no lift and no offer of help with suitcases - both of which you'd expect for the hefty price-tag. We made it up the three-and-a-half flights. Again, the overbearing antiques and tacky paintings. This room was in the eaves, overlooking the street. If you imagine the house out of the Amityville Horror, then we'd be waving from the two "devil's-eyes" windows. The bed was very high and dominated the room Princess and the Pea-style. But what was really unnerving was that the mattress pad was too big for the mattress it padded ... so they'd curved it down on one side. The effect was that you were trying to nod off on a precipice. Add this to the fact that the street (Barrington) is very noisy (blues bar over the road and prone to street-people with getto-blasters) and you don't get a good night's rest. The second breakfast was very disappointing ...
So, lessons:
* Chintz, antiques and nasty paintings may look like fun on the web, but it's the hotel equivalent of choking on pot pourri. Although the place was clean, it didn't "feel"clean. It felt musty and claustrophobic
* An offer of carrying cases upstairs for guests would be welcome, given the price tag
* Lower beds would give the poky rooms more of a sense of space
* Need consistency with breakfasts. After a poor night's sleep, breakfast is often long-anticipated and needs to satisfy.
Plus points about the Waverley: friendly staff, free WiFi, free tea and coffee on tap in the reception - along with lovely free cake in the late afternoon.
