“A disappointing anniversary night stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2011

A nice place to stay, but with some faults. Hard to access from the street with baggage:too many stairs. Back outside and down the street, and up stairs again to access room. Large room with private balcony overlooking courtyard, and above-average bath, but the furnishings appeared to be dated and tired. Continental breakfast was adequate. In the nine days we toured NS and PEI, this was the most expensive place we stayed, coincidentally on our 40th wedding anniversary. The hotel knew about that in advance, but didn't provide so much as a congratulatory note, let alone a bottle of wine to celebrate. A nice place, but not one we will stay in again.

Room Tip: You can get better value elsewhere in Halifax.

We acknowledged the wedding anniversary of this guest upon check in and ensured they had a romantic room with one of our four poster beds and garden-view balcony. We include breakfast, parking and Wifi at no additional cost. We find it unreasonable to expect free wine as well.

Our 2nd stay here. The hotel is well placed in Halifax for sightseeing and easy access to the waterfront with its restaurants, bars and shops. There is a (small) car park where you can safely leave your vehicle, no charge.
The hotel consists of several old properties now converted to a hotel. The downside of this is that having checked in you have to take your luggage up steep steps and a flight of stairs to the room. We had one at the back of the building which was rather dark, though comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant one night which was very good (best to book) but pricey.Free internet access by receptionso able to check in for flight home and print out boarding passes.

Room Tip: Rooms at front may be noisy but brighter. I'd avoid the ground floor if possible

When reading Trip Advisor reviews I have learned to discount the “one-off” often negative comments. However “Mr.weiner” who posted on 27 June does provide some very valid insight regarding the property. I’m not sure I would market the Halliburton as a boutique hotel either. In my opinion, the Halliburton is a large (3 building) B&B / Inn that would best be described as a unique historical inn / property offering hotel type services.

This is a good location as all of the major tourist attractions within walking distance and there are lots of eating places within a 10 minute or so walk. In addition, there is a supermarket and beer/wine store about 5 minutes away.

While others have complained about the noise we did not have a problem. Our room was on the top floor of the main building facing the street. If your room is in the back facing the pub / parking lot you may hear more. These are old buildings so you will hear more noise than you would in a newer concrete hotel. Last, the air conditioning and heat is combination of various systems. We had an interior a/c unit in our room that was a bit loud. It did however cool the room during one of the hottest weekends of the summer.

The lobby, library, and breakfast areas were all very comfortable. There are two wireless networks; one was much faster than the other and the speed was inconsistent. If you do not have your own device with you, there is a computer in the lobby for guest use.

There is a nice garden where you can get a drink and relax. In addition, there was a terrace on the top floor of the main building where you could sit and drink your own beer / wine. The terrace was pleasant but nothing special. Remember you are in the middle of a city. In addition, one of the wooden chairs was broken.

In summary, we had a nice stay at the Halliburton, Breakfast was simple, but just what we and many other folks would want: coffee, tea, cereal, yogurt, toast, fresh fruit, etc.. The staff was very helpful and the location was ideal for the things we wanted to do.

Very kind & courteous front desk staff! Our room was in the "Lithgow House" on the first floor and was classically decorated with a very comfortable bed, a sofa and a TV. Free wireless was provided. The location was very central and the inn had lots of information about how to spend our days in Halifax. Breakfast was simplet, but varied enough to meet our needs. Loved the atmosphere - would definitely return!!

Great location, easy walking to waterfront and places of interest. On-site parking convenient. Had two stays and recommend the back rooms at ground or first level as our street-front room was noisy with street revellers on the Friday night. Top floor rooms can be difficult to manage with heavy suitcases and external steps to courtyard and parking area were a little ricketty. The rooms themselves were very comfortable and clean. Highly recommend a meal or two at Stories restaurant - fabulous innovative food and great wine selection, plus friendly service. Front desk also very helpful with map directions readily provided when requested. The new courtyard area is delightful for a pre-dinner drink - only you have to go inside to order as the area is not serviced.

If we ever return to Halifax, this is where we will stay.

Room Tip: Well appointed and plenty of room. Cosy lounge area.

Stayed at the Halliburton for a few days on a work trip. Found the hotel very comfortable with welcoming staff, and a great location. Plenty of options for dining nearby, and an easy walk to the centre of Halifax

The staff were excellent. The room was OK, not the largest in our Nova Scotia tour but more than adequate for 3 nights, especially if out exploring for most of the day as we were. No views. Hotel is in a good location as all the major tourist sites are within walking distance. Plenty of eating places within a 10 minute walk but we ended up eating in their restaurant twice as the food was excellent, the best we had in 2 weeks going round NS.
Some other reviews complain about noise. It is an old building so you will obviously hear other people more than you would in a concrete, purpose designed hotel. Adds to the charm and it was never intrusive. Our room was in the main buidling and we did not hear any noise from the nearby pub as some have complained about. Its a city, there will be noise unless you are multi stories up in a double glazed purpose built hotel. We had no problems with the parking. Breakfast was a bit above average for the 5 places we stayed at. No one does fresh coffee in NS for breakfast, its already made and kept warm. Used to Eurpoe where you get it made fresh for you normally. If we ever visit Halifax again, I would be happy to stay there again and would ost definitely ahve dinner there again.
