“Older style with Westin features”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

Overall nice stay....only some minor hiccups. On check in at 9pm, for some reason there was a line up of 10 people waiting to check in with on 2 front desk reception personnel..usually Westin picks up on this quickly, but this time they didn't...but they did comp some extra SPG points for the delay, which was nice. My room was 834, Junior Suite, which had lots of room. 2 bathrooms, which included a jacuzzi. The impressive feature was access to a HUGE balcony that only two other Junior suites have access to as well. This balcony overlooks the front of the hotel and gives you a small view of the city. Can only imagine what it would be like in the summer. The VIA rail station is next door, so those that are traveling by rail, it is very convenient. Next door to the train station is a Superstore grocery store, that is open 24 hours. Which is nice for a everything from bite to eat or any forgotten travel items. The other hiccup was with the workout room. The lights are on motion senor (suspect for the 'green' program), but it doesn't work to well when you are on one of the machines and the lights go out!! Pretty dark with no windows! Mentioned it to front desk, so we'll see on my next visit if anything was done about it.

Room Tip: Room 836, balcony access or rooms on either side (835? 837?, can't remember)

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent visit with us. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your upgrade to our studio suite with a view of Cornwallis Park. Our location in the downtown Halifax Seaport District is what differentiates us from other hotels and we're glad you enjoyed our neighbourhood.

We want to apologize for the delay in check-in. We're happy to hear that our team did their best to try to accommodate. Thank you for your comments about the lights in our fitness centre. We've shared your review with our team to ensure proper training and follow-up.

We hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back again.

Until then,
Guido Kerpel

Good
- Great staff. Very helpful.
- we had a good night at Yuk Yuks on the first floor.
- Good location.

So So
- Rooms are modern but small and with small windows.

Bad
- Nothing.

TIP: If you want to rent a car (driving down the south shore or wine region is a must) then do it an advance. The cruise ships bring in a lot of people and they take them all.

The Westin Nova Scotian was originally one of the "railroad hotels" built as destinations throughout Canada. Hence the railroad station is connected to the hotel.
As with other "railroad hotels", the corridors are long so you may have a lengthy walk from the elevator to your room. Lucky for us, we found a 'secret' elevator by going through an old wooden door near out room. I guess it is meant to be the elevator to get to the pool but for us in was a convenient way to get to the lobby.
The hotel has been refurbished in recent years and has all the conveniences one expects in a higher class hotel. Having booked through "Hotwire", it was good value for the money.
The location is good if you want to be close to, but not in, the "action" downtown. Restaurants, bars, and the waterfront promenade are a short walk away -- at least in the warm weather!

Room Tip: Since the hotel was not busy when we were there (early January), I asked for a free upgrade. The cl...

Located in the downtown of Halifax, near to a local farmers market, and grocery store, close to Pier 21 (historic immigration centre), and walking distance to multiple restaurants and bars/pubs. Beautiful old building, very friendly and helpful staff, and the room was very nice also. Had a king room overlooking the front of the building and everything was clean, comfortable and to my satisfaction. The pool and workout area were well appointed and met the requirements. The price on priceline was fantastic and I have no complaints, aside form the slowness of some of the elevators, and the $18 to self park in very small spots behind the hotel. Small issues and they didn't detract from a great stay. I will definitely stay here again.

Lovely Hotel in an excellent location, just a few steps from the Halifax waterfront. Lobby is beautiful and spacious, rooms are tastefully decorated. The quality of finishes and luxury feel of the place is wonderful. The complementary Starbucks is a great idea! Valet parking is nearly the same price as self parking so an easy choice - fast, professional service! Excellent for a weekend getaway!

Room Tip: Rooms further then the ball room would be quieter!

We had stayed at this hotel last year but was not impressed. However, we decided to give it another chance because of its location. All I have to say is the service was excellent, and room 846 provided this tired mother of two toddlers the BEST sleep of my life.

Room Tip: Seriously, 846, definitely not near the elevator.

As one who has always been leery about "Package Deals" where in days long past, the cost/value and unexpected surprises left so much to be desired, this Halifax Westin room/Yuk Yuks Comedy Club/Dinner package left me feeling MORE than completely satisfied!

Where to start about this marvelous, rather unexpected and relaxing experience?
The total package of a 'must do' Harbor View room (small premium) including dinner for "2" in the Hotel Resto, and including 2 'reserved seats' at the Yuk Yuks Comedy Club cost...$216. When questioned about those infamous 'extras' that usually rear their ugly head, they did not exist, and did NOT appear on the final bill.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with grace, class, and professionalism from Doorman to Check In desk. Delightful, young, and pleasantly alert, hard working people! BRAVO to the Westin staff and management!
Once we entered our room, the telephone rang with a certain "Michael" greeting us and stating he looked forward to seeing us for dinner and at the club. A nice welcoming gesture and indeed appreciated after a long day.

With no expectations for the restaurant, we were overwhelmed by both the 1st Class service and food that was superb - be that the spinach salad with nuts and strawberries, to the 'made for me' Caesar salad, to a beautifully done and spiced salmon fillet entree or an incredibly delicious garlic oil pasta plate..Dessert was also wonderful. The table given to us could also be considered their 'best' selection, and not space or position challenged - always important in any dining ritual.

Once done, we sauntered down the hall to Yuk Yuks and were unexpectedly greeted as VIPs. Our host was gracious and lead us to our reserved seats that were absolutely and perfectly placed. As for the show, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Were these the best stand ups ever seen? Let's just say that there were plenty of laughs in a wonderful and intimate atmosphere.

BRAVO Westin and Yuk Yuks for a great offering. We will be back! Promise!
