“Excellent place to be based.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Great location, close to the harbour and waterfront. The room was very clean and well decorated. Very pleasant staff and they let me store my luggage for few hours even after I checked out. No complaints and enjoyed the hotel stay for 3 nights.

I have been told that this is the nicest hotel on Halifax. Too bad. It is very, very mediocre. Some of the staff were great. Others were horribly inept. A wonderful lobby, but tiny rooms with tinier bathrooms. Pealing wallpaper and mold in the shower. Try elsewhere.

I stayed one night with spouse and three kids. The pool is not as big as it seems in the photo - 4 feet depth throughout - so not great for non-swimming five year old. The hot-tub is a large semi-circle that is also close to 4 ft deep (nice). This is a classic Canadian Railway type hotel with wide hallways and (unfortunately) kind of small windows that limit the enjoyment of the harbourview. The bedding is great with lots of pillows - but double beds instead of queens makes it a bit more crowded even if the room is pretty large. I enjoy staying here - is a classy traditional downtown hotel.

The Westin Nova Scotian is a large hotel, located not far from the Halifax waterfront, which provides an opportunity for a relaxing stroll and many dining options. It has a connecting tunnel with the VIA rail Terminal and is very close to the cruise terminal. A large supermarket/variety store is almost next door.

Our room was everything you expect from a large hotel. We were lucky and got harbour views on our first stay and views of the park on our second stay. The hotel does have very long corridors so it is possible you may stay quite a distance from the elevator. We stayed in July and August, on both occasions Halifax was hot and humid so it was good the air conditioning was up to this challenge.

The hotel has a typical hotel style restaurant, we didn't eat dinner there but the buffet breakfast was of a high standard. The hotel had free wi-fi in the lobby but not in the rooms. The nearby Bishops Landing Piazza on the waterfront offers a number of dining options - we tried the Bicycle Thief, Cafe Ristretto and Hamachi Steakhouse and would recommend all three. The hotel is also vey near the Haliax Seaport Farmers market, which offers a cheap food option. As we were on a long trip we required laundry facilities, which the hotel didn't have, however, the Kwik Wash Laundromat was only a 15 minute walk away.

This is an excellent hotel with great ambience. On a recent visit for a "get away weekend", we found the service to be exceptional. Ashlee in Reservations was so helpful and resourceful in meeting our request. She was both professional and personable while making me feel that my call was of utmost importance. The other staff member worthy of mention is Aayoosh on the front desk. We felt very welcome and very appreciated right from the beginning. We were very well received and had a wonderful experience.

Great Hotel with very good food and super staff.
One important thing when you take a Taxi make sure the meter is running. On two occasions it was not.The first we paid what we knew was the right amount ,no problem. How ever the second one was an attempt to really rip us off.We picked this cab up where the Cruise Ship was docked.Traveled a very short distance and the driver demanded $10.We informed him we had been in Halifax for several days and not just off the ship.Offered him $5 at which point he became very belligerent .Screamed ,told us to get out and we were wasting his time.We started to get out still intending to pay at which point he ran around the other side of the cab still screaming at us but took the cash. All of the other drivers were fine but if you are on a Cruise Ship take extra care.

Booked the Westin Hotel the second week in September 2012. This was supposed to be the nicest hotel in our five day tour of Nova Scotia. Instead it was the biggest disappointment. The location was great as was the staff. The first room was so dreadful I actually complained, not like me. The staff was apologetic and immediately moved us to a nicer room. That room was better but way below expectations. It seriously needs to be updated. The chairs in the room were dreadfully uncomfortable. The toilet was a commercial grade that you would have seen 20 years ago in a bus station. I dropped something on the bathroom floor and had to get down on the floor to find it, "ick" is all I can say about the cleanliness, it had not been scrubbed in years. The tile in the shower had mildew spots on it, some of the trim in the room was off the wall with exposed wires hanging out. My worst pet peeve, everywhere you turned was a means to charge you: Internet in the room was $9.95, there were two bottles of free water on the counter then there were two bottles behind them that if you caught the fine print you realized were 5.95 a bottle! Too easy to grab one thinking it was complimentary like the others. Parking was $20 a night so add that to the rate as well. We had two rooms in our group, both smelled musty and were a major disappointment. This hotel does not live up to the Westin name, do not expect a luxury hotel here.

Room Tip: Maybe try the Marriot or four points, they had great locations and may be nicer
