Owner description: Experience an exciting part of Canada's history by visiting this 19th-century fort with a sweeping view of downtown Halifax. Between May and October, the Citadel is brought to life by two historic regiments of the British Army - the pageantry of the 78th Highlanders and the precision of the Royal Artillery thrill visitors daily with live re-enactments. The skirl of the bagpipes mixes with the crack of a rifle and the assembly of recruits for the next foot drill. There's no shortage of authentic experiences to view and participate in! Kids will love the Xplorers Program - an activity book just for them. When the sun sets, it's time to experience the other side of the Citadel - join the Citadel Ghost Walk and experience the dark and errie lore from the early 1800's. Tours start mid-July and run every Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8:30pm until the end of October. Cash at the front gate.

“History buffs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Loved going to the citadel! It was great to get a history lesson in such a fun way! The staff and guides were great. I watched them interact with children, making it fun for them (hard to do in the age of technology). The guides made the difference between "looking" and "having fun"

“View of the city and history of Halifax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013 via mobile

The star-shaped fort at the top of the hill offers a terrific view of the city. It was built in the mid 19th century in order to repel an attack by US forces. Inside the citadel are a couple of staff dressed in epoch regiment uniforms. Everyday at noon is carrying out the traditional cannon firing since year 1856.

“Pretty cool”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

The Citadel Historic site is fairly interesting. Amazing views of the city from this hilltop fortress. You can't see the Citadel from street level since it's built into a hilltop, but once you brave the little climb up the hill past the city clock, you'll step inside of a walled fortress complete with ceremonial guards in period costume. Be forewarned, the noonday cannon goes off at 12:00 on the dot! Local giggle as tourists jump.

“very well done”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

There is lots to see so allow plenty of time. Be sure to take a free guided tour. The 15-minute introductory film at the VC is interesting but the 45-minute version is a bit dry to sit through (and we are history buffs). Be sure to talk to the costumed guides throughout the park as they are well-informed.

“Built to keep out the invasion of the "Yanks" in the south!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

Beautiful views and a terrific place filled with history! The guide said it was built to keep the invading United States forces out. Now they are spending millions to bring United States Visitors to Canada. If you study the War of 1812, you will know what that meant!!
