I was in Halifax for a Day trip with a friend, it was well past lunch time and we were heading for a bite, we had been shopping on Spring Garden Road but were now headed for the car, I walked right by this unassuming store front but it caught my friends eye and she asked if I would like some Greek food - Sure lets go in I said - neither of us had ever eaten here before.
We walked in and the Gentleman at the bar spotted us and headed over to take us to the table.
I was struck by the richness of the interior, it was like stepping back in time but not in a bad way, the interior has a long bar with rich wood The tables were meant for intimate conversation, The chairs were generous and comfortable.
The menu has a great deal of diveristy, lamb, beef, chicken, pork, shellfish, fish, sausage - prices ranging from $6 for appetizer to $13 for various lunch platters and on up $$$ for the more sophisticated meals.
I had the Spanakopita which was an appetizer $10 - there were 2 very large portions on my plate with a cream dill sauce - It was good. I only ate one of the pieces and had the other packed up to go as I still had my main meal to go. If you like Feta with your spanakopita it does not come on the side you would need to ask for that to be added to the side.
For my main meal I had the Souvlaki wrap platter $13 you have your choice of meat on the wrap, I love lamb so that is what I choose, They ask how you want your lamb cooked, I choose medium (it was a bit overdone) but still good. The pita I believe is made on site, it tasted like it had just came out of a wood fired oven the outside was crispy the inside soft and tender.
On the platter with the Souvlaki was a greek salad and greek potatoes. The greek potatoes were ok, The Greek Salad was very good - it was the sauce on the greek salad that made it so good It was a stanard Greek with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, feta and black olives the sauce was your standard vinigrette except I would say they use a balsamic vinegar in theirs....it was delicious...I wanted to lick my plate just to get the remainder of the delicious dressing.
Service was friendly and efficient.
My friend and I both really enjoyed our meal and experience - was it the best I have ever had? - Greek salad Yes, Souvlaki not as good as Yazoos in Fredericton But still very good. Spanokipta was good.
When we walked out we felt as if we had had a very relaxing good meal, We both stated that we would eat there again without hesitation.
