We went to Bollock's early in the evening as a group of 6 people and found the restaurant to be extremely busy. This is obviously a crowd favourite. The menu is limited but interesting since it offers exclusively 'exotic' northern wild game and fish. Not everything is available all the time as availability depends on supply conditions. The buffalo steak was outstanding and easily one of the tastiest steaks I have ever had anywhere. It also happened to be one of the most enormous hunks of meat I ever saw on a restaurant plate. The fish also looked incredibly tasty, although no one at our table had it. Of course, that combo of quantity and quality doesn't come cheap, but hey, it's the north and if you are here, you can probably afford it!
It is a fun, informal and definitely quirky place that should be a required stop for anyone visiting Yellowknife. An essential part of the experience is the set-up itself. Pic-nic tables, rustic furniture and a small homey historic building make for a great atmosphere, but don't expect comfort, privacy, space or romance here. If you can't find a table, just sit with a stranger, that's how its done here. Larger groups will find it difficult to sit together here because of the physical layout. Expect to break up into smaller groups and meet again after dinner.
Want help digesting half a bison? The restaurant is located in the eclectic old town which is very scenic and very, very cool. Pilot's landing, another Yellowknife landmark, is located just down the street and offers a spectacular view of the city if you do not fear stairs.
