“Great Lodge for Aurora Light and comfort wilderness place to stay.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

Stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights, same as previous reviewer's comment, can't ask for luxury but clean and comfortable to enjoy the wilderness area. We love that we just step out from our cabin to see the Northern light. We are lucky that we have a very good Chef during our stay, Mia the Japanese girl whose a holiday work visa Chef, she made us Japanese French fusion very delicious, we are appreciate that she made a excellent dinner with limited ingredients. Also the day time activity, Norm and Mike take us for boat ride to one of the place on the island, we went to hiking and guys went to fishing, we pick the wild berry to made jelly and tea leaves during hiking, guys got 5 big pike, they made a very great shore lunch for us. The whole trip are unforgettable for us. Highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Cabin with bathroom recommend.

A couple of friends and I headed out to Trout Rock Lodge for a weekend in January. We were picked up by a bus from our hotel and drove to the meeting point and rode the rest of the trip in a Hagglaund vehicle… which can travel anywhere. It was a great experience! Ragner, the lodge owner hosted an amazing weekend! The food at the lodge is great, the staff and guides are friendly and knowledgeable. We went on snowmobile ride out the ice fishing spot. One of my friends caught a large pike, which was prepared for us for lunch in the nearby camp. This was an amazing adventure, I can’t wait to go back in the summer for the fishing trip!

My Fishing Partner and I took this trip in June of 2012, on his first cast of the day he caught a fish, then another on the second cast, and so on for 5 days - The first fish were bigger than most fish we pull out of northern Ontario. We caught only 28 fish over 40 inches, but the fishing, room, meals were great, I would go back in a second. We took Ragners boat from Yellowknife (that was also quite a ride), and the Modified Beaver back. The shore lunches were also great, this is a trip I will always remember.

We stayed there for 4 nights for aurora viewing. You can't ask for luxury in a lodge, but the room and ensuite are clean and decent. Ragner, the owner runs a tight ship which ensures our safety and pleasant stay. Ron the Mr. Fix-it, from hardware to tricky situation, from photography advice to entertaining guests, he does all well!

For city dwellers like us, the stay was a wonderful wilderness experience. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to view aurora in an exclusive location and relax in a beautiful natural environment with expert guide.

I have missed out on adding photos when submitting my review, finally get to it and uploaded a few. Would appreciate if the editor could tag these photos together with my submitted review.

I went there in late fall with excellent weather on the first 2 nights but rain and cloudy on the last 2.. Try to go earlier of in winter where you have more chance og getting a bright blue sky

This lodge is acclaimed for fishing trips but is equally excellent fir watching the Northern lights. You can get good viewing and photos just by stepping out of the room with plenty preparation time. You would not expect 5 stars service in the wilderness but its close with daily activities included. The package price is very reasonable and I heard that it would cost more if you want a room to your own which is to be expected.
Beware, its not easy to book as the number of beds are limited ,secure early if you want a taste of true wilderness and a fantastic lights show

I visited Trout Rock Lodge twice this year - in April and September, and had totally different experiences and enjoyed myself tremendously. I was a single traveller for this fall visit, and met with 9 other travellers & had a really good time there together.

We got in and out from YZF to the lodge via float planes. Fall activities included boat rides out to different islands each day, fishing, cranberries picking to make fresh jam, bannock making, mushrooms collecting, all for preparing shore lunches, hiking and learning about the boreal forest, lichen, local bushes, animal & bird spotting (squirrels, whiskey jacks, spruce grouse on a tree, wild geese flying above us), seeing the corona in the sky, visit to amethyst site, hot tub soaking, picking local bushes along the way to make bushtea and watching the nature display of colors & lights from sunset, twilight to the aurora. The lodge guides were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable (ranging from preparing shore lunches and telling us about the forest & bushes along the way, to fixing plumbing & hot water hiccups at the lodge). Kudos to Mike/Tempura, Norm & Kyla.

We were blessed with good weather upon arrival, but quickly changed over the next few days, so we saw the aurora for 1 nite out of our 4D3N stay, on a full moon situation. Good thing we had Ron on site as he was very helpful with the stars & constellations, as well as photography guide & tips to all for taking pictures of the aurora. Also we made do on our final nite by all staying up late & creating a dim having a group unplugged singing session amongst guides & guests hoping the weather would clear out. Sadly thick clouds and winds were unfavourable to us. Such is Mother Nature when it comes to aurora.

We were definitely well fed at the lodge - wholesome breakfast, shore lunches, full spread for brunch and dinners. There were plenty of fruits, snacks (chips, chocolate bars, cup noodles, muffins) and beverages to keep us going. While cell phone signals were not within range here, we were connected with WIFI and satellite phones. Ragnar, the lodge owner was always around at dinnertime, to find out what we did for the day and hear us out. YellowknifeTours/Angela was never far away from us throughout all times & activities too.

For me personally, I met and made some new friends with my fellow travellers and the lodge guides. We swap other travel trips & tales, and looked out for one another throughout our stay together. Ragnar, Angela, Ron & CK welcome me back as coming home. What more can I ask for ya. Till we meet again :)
