“Potential Diamond But Still In The Rough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Courtyard for one night after a 9 day visit of the more rural areas of Newfoundland. The hotel presents itself very nicely and you would expect a consistent quality because the Marriott name is attached. I am a Gold rewards member and we got upgraded to a Junior suite which was nice. The check-in was fine and when we got to the room the room looked very nice overlooking the harbor. However, what we have found are the little details are lacking. The cart to bring your luggage had several wheels that were not working properly, the front desk clerk did offer to help us but still the cart was difficult to push even for two healthy gentlemen. Also, the bed sheet had some kind of a stain on the side of it. They were clean but a very noticeable stain, not good. The bathroom ammenities had two conditioners and no shampoo,we traveled with our own shampoo thank God. Lastly, the walls are paper thin, we heard our next door neighbor talking on his cell phone like we were the ones receiving the call. Also, the harbor noise is very noticeable on the 3rd floor but did not disrupt our sleep. So all in all for a one night visit it was fine, would I stay here multiple nights, not so sure about that because it is the little things that sometimes can make a trip great or just average. Fortunately our previous 8 days were great so we aren't letting this get in the way of the memories of our trip.

A two night first stay in this modern blue-painted and easily recognisable hotel on one of St John's main streets. Its easy to reach from the airport and straightforward to access most of the main roads around town. We found the front desk staff variable- some extra helpful, others simply going through the motions. Our room, top floor with harbour view was decent, and maybe not as brand spanking new or as large as we'd expect given the hotel's exterior. It was a weekend and the lobby facilities, restaurant and bar were generally pretty busy and we sometimes couldn't find space in the hotel's lot right opposite . Its a chain hotel- we expected it to be convenient and comfortable rather than characterful, and we weren't disappointed.

A special word about the restaurant, Smitty's. When we first arrived our room wasn't ready so we walked into the restaurant for lunch. Whilst the place was busy, the time it took to get an order placesd and food received was in our view unreasonable for what is in essence mostly serving diner-type food and diner quality. It was difficult to locate our waitress to get her to chase our food. That one experience put us off going there again and we had breakfast out both days (Blu on Water Street being the better of our two). As well as not impressing us with service and food quality, Smitty's was notably more expensive than breakfast outside.

Plans began months ago when 6 girlfriends decided to visit Newfoundland. Our good fortune was choosing the Marriott Courtyard in St. John's. Our reservation experience gave us our first clue, this was going to be a good choice, booked with a lovely gal Allison. We had 3 rooms overlooking the beautiful harbour, which were well equipped & spotless. Comfortable beds, large bathrooms, free wifi, coffee maker & fridge. We asked for a place to play our nightly games & luckily we were offered an empty conference room which delighted us no end. We even ordered in pizza one night
and they forgot to send plates & cutlery, but Ricky immediately showed up with both from the kitchen. Laundry room facilities are great with a lovely comfy chair to enjoy while waiting.
We can't say enough about the outstanding front desk staff. Sheri, Nicole, Cody, Allison, Ricky along with the others, were so welcoming & helpful in every way possible.
I wanted to meet the manager, Elizabeth Taylor, yes, that is her real name, came out to greet me
so I could express our gratitude for making our 7 day stay so delightful. When we did leave the gals behind the desk came out and gave us a hug & said they were going to miss us! Where else but Newfoundland would you have an experience like that? Thank you on behalf of 6 happy guests.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for an ocean view, well worth it!

Everything, except one thing, which I'll mention later was EXCELLENT !! Please CONGRATULATE your front desk staff members: NICOLE CUFF and CHRIS BRUCE. These two individuals are extremely professional, accomodating and made our experience at your hotel most gratifying !; they definitely exceeded our expectations !

We arrived a few hours prior to check-in, and they allowed us to park our rental car in your lot, as we went on a formal city tour. Upon check-in, they informed us that we were upgraded to an Ocean-View Junior Suite, which differed from our original street view room....that was really SUPER !!

Both Nicole and Chris greeted us personally whenevr we entered and exited the hotel lobby, which was a really nice personal approach. Both of these individuals deserve high accolades from your hotel management. In my career, I've managed many staff teams at Bell Canada, and I would easily accept Nicole Cuff and Chris Bruce based on their exemplary performance.

My only issue is that upon checkout June 15, 2013, I was informed that my Marriott rewards points would be converted to my Aeroplan account. It's been about 1 1/2 weeks, and this has not yet occurred. I inquired with both Marriott Rewards and Aeroplan and have not received anything else, except the runaround ! Is there any chance that you at The Marriott can look into this matter and either resolve it, or pass some positive status on this matter to me.

Thanks,

June 24, 2013

Room Tip: Try for a Junior Suite on the Water Side

Don't think we've ever received such a warm welcome to a franchise/chain hotel especially considering it was 1am on a wet, windy night. Shari, Cody and Chris made us so welcome all week treating us like long lost friends. Thanks guys !
Room wasn't very spacious but had everything we needed including very reliable wi-if and a great view of the working harbor below. I'd agree with the prior comment regarding pillows although we opted for non-allergenic so maybe feather were better. We had no noise issues with either the harbor or other guests. The whole hotel was spotless.
Good location between Signal Hill and George St.

Room Tip: You pay extra for view of the harbor but its worth it. We were in a king room at the end of the corr...

I stayed here for 7 nights during a recent business trip to St. John's and Mount Pearl. This hotel is the one that my company uses, and we get a pretty good rate here. My first impressions were very good. My colleague and I arrived late on a rainy night and were welcomed by a smiling face at reception. The check-in procedure was done in no time, and we were given a quick run-down of what is available in the hotel, and nearby.

My room was really good, overlooking the harbour and Signal Hill in the distance. I had a comfortable king sized bed, with an easy chair in the corner and a desk in the other. The flat screen TV was great, with lots of programs, and the bathroom was well appointed. The only things that were not quite ideal were: 1) there was no security lock box in the room, and 2) the WiFi speed was not great (especially on the Sunday). Otherwise, I had a very comfortable stay here.

The hotel is located right next to the docks, and the main part of the town is just 5-10 minutes away by foot. You can also walk to the Geo science center (15 minutes) or Signal Hill (30 minutes), although make sure you are prepared for rain as the weather can change on a dime up here. I did not eat an evening meal in this hotel, but I did have a drink at the bar a couple of times, and enjoyed looking at the view across the harbour. The breakfast here is good, although you have to be careful when ordering to make sure you get what you need (more than once I ended up with unwanted hash browns). There is an area in the restaurant set aside for a buffet, but the hotel does not use this for a breakfast buffet; perhaps this would be a good idea for the future.

All told, I had a good time here, and would definitely stay here next time I visit St. John's.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the harbor.

Thank you for your detailed review, it is very much appreciated by everyone here at our property! We are glad to hear that overall you had a great experience here, our front desk always loves to welcome with a smile! We have noted your suggestions and will work on implementing them, unfortunately we are not able to have a buffet everyday (Sundays only) but you are right, the breakfast to order is fantastic. We hope to welcome you again soon!

In St. John's, hotels are not cheap. We stayed twice, first time we had three nights in a musty, dark room on the second floor (for which we paid extra for a Jr suite), with a view of Water Street, not much of a harbour view at all. On our second visit we got a standard room on the 4th floor which was much nicer in all respects than the suite: roomy, nice shower, great view of the harbour, bright, not musty; pillows still uncomfortable. I wonder if the higher rooms have been renovated? Location is good, staff are pretty good in general. Parking is free and convenient. Try to get some fresh cookies in the afternoon, although they seem to be hit and miss, forgotten on some days (we did get them on our first day).

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the higher floors, they seem to be nicer/newer and have better views of the har...
