“Great location but that's where it ends”

This hostel seemed to be more of a place for the staff than it did the guests. They used most of the storage in the small kitchen and were using the TV room to sleep in. Note that there was also no common room or laundry as advertised on the HI web site. The cleanliness was very lacking as the staff spent most of their time in the office on their smart phones/laptops instead of cleaning. For those wanting a good nights sleep this isn't the place for you, there is no quiet times and the partiers are coming back in the middle of the night with no concern for the guests. The only positive thing about the hostel is the price as St. John's is very expensive, it's too bad that someone doesn't open a proper hostel downtown and maybe the competition would smarten them up.

Can't really get much better for the price. Yes, it's not a typical hostel setup and it does get crowded with only two bathrooms for all 20-odd people, but it's close to downtown and quite clean. Won't find much better elsewhere.

My friend and I stayed here in July for three nights. The location truly can't be beat.
This hostel was absolutely perfect for us! We had a private room on the third floor. The only complaint is that it was very stuffy in the room. We went down to the front desk to ask them to recommend a store where we could buy a fan for the room. Instead of recommending a store, they gave us the fan in the office to use for our entire stay- very very nice of them. When we returned from dinner that night we also found a second fan waiting for us outside our room. They truly went above our expectations there!
The shared bathroom was always kept clean, and the wait (if any) was never long.
We were left alone for the most part, which I like. They were available for help, but never bothering us.
We got to park on the street outside, for a $50 refundable deposit. We nearly left without our deposit, luckily the man at the front desk came running out to stop us!
Do not be expecting any great ambiance or decoration, it is quite dated with broken down furniture. If you are looking to get out of your room and experience St John's, then this is perfect!

Room Tip: Top floor has private rooms, but they are very hot in the summer!

As is previously mentioned, the staff and location are the only good things about the hostel. Although you could say that you get what you pay for, I've stayed in enough hostels to know that cheap accomodation can be clean and enjoyable - neither words I would use to describe this hostel. The layout is not conducive at all to socializing - good luck making friends here - and there was a bar's worth of open liquor in my 6-bed female dorm, but the awful and completely unacceptable level of dirt and filth make this place a real dud. It seems to me that the proprietor doesn't care at all about the property - HI should take note. Do not stay here.

It is overpriced for a renovated old house that has been converted into a hostel. I chose a hostel over a motel for the social aspect of having a common room. The common room was in another building then mine and no one seemed to be around when I decided to stop by. This hostel is three or more separate buildings.
The building with the common room was MUCH NICER then the one I stayed in, but I think it only had single rooms, not shared rooms.

Room Tip: There is multiple buildings for this hostel, be sure to get a room in the building with a common roo...

A great location in the heart of St Johns but apart from that, this place is in serious need of an upgrade. Not the usual HI standard I am used to, stayed in various hostels throughout Canada and this on is not up to scratch. Worn out carpets, beds held together with parcel tape and kitchen/lounge area dark in the basement. Rubbish wi-fi, only available in the lobby/stairwell.

Volunteer staff not very helpful or knowledgeable due to lack of training and experience (only been there for a couple of weeks)

Not worht the money. Would not recommend.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere, there must be better similar priced places in St Johns

It seems accommodation prices in St. John's are quite high so I decided to stay a couple nights with a friend in this place. I ended up saving some money but there were definitely times when I thought staying in an actual motel or hotel would be better. It's pretty much an old house converted into a hostel and not much done to upgrade it. Since there's only 2 washrooms, it can be a while before you can make use of it. This place does scream vagabond/vagrant magnet.
