“Spot on and intimate!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

Our experience was great! French toast d'lish; rasher bacon it seems so a little thick and fatty but otherwise tasty. Omelette, simple with bacon, chanterelles and cheese, almost perfect, browned eggs at edges, not my fave. Great service, beautifully appointed rooms!

“Excellent Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

We visited in August and had a really great dinner. While the in-room air conditioning was initially distracting (but didn't blow down on our food), once we got going, we forgot about it entirely.

The service was excellent and they took the time to ensure our kids' nut allergies were well accommodated. The food was just a delight. All at our table had a great time. We had: Seafood Chowders, Scallops and Beef Tartare to start, with Moose Bolognese, Catch of the day (Salmon and Halibut) and their game of the day (Lamb) as mains. It felt a bit strange to be ordering lamb in Newfoundland (rather than a seafood dish), it was nothing short of amazing.

A real treat and a highlight of our vacation.

“Interesting take on local cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We had a great dinner here with a group of colleagues from across Canada. Great service, interesting food, good wine list. REcommend the Bacalao very highly. The lamb was also much enjoyed.

“Interesting and Innovative Seafood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Dined here with friends the other night. Very nice series of rooms in a converted house. Service was very friendly, a bit chaotic and not quite as good as it thinks it is but very satisfactory.

The food was generally excellent. Particularly like the Bacalao and More appetizer with a cod fish cake (like a crab cake), some of the best calimari I have ever had and some other seafood bites. Main course was the duck duo - the duck breast was very good, nicely cooked and tender. I found the confit a bit dry but the leek potato cake on the side was excellent.

Wine list was good and not that pricey unless you wanted it to be.

Overall an excellent dining experience.

“Definitely try this one”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

This restaurant is in a converted house and so the dining areas are split into the various rooms, creating a more intimate setting than a traditional, purpose-built restaurant. Our server was very attentive and did a great job.

The least favorite part of my experience at Bacalao was the glass of Sauvignon Blanc. It was almost undrinkable and the chardonnay is a much better choice. Rather than order a main course, I had a three course meal consisting of the seafood chowder, cod tongue salad and jigg's dinner cabbage roll. The chowder was excellent, as was the cod's tongue salad. However, it is a meal in and of itself. It is not so much a salad as it is cod's tongues with a bit of lettuce. I wish that there would have been more lettuce and less cod tongues and had I known it was the opposite, I would not have ordered it. I could not really enjoy the cabbage rolls because I was so full at that point.

The following day we attended a private rum tasting hosted by one of the owners of Bacalao and she was very nice and personable. After the tasting, we were served a full jigg's dinner prepared by the restaurant. It was very good but not quite as good as my in-laws prepare from scratch at their home.

Overall, i would definitely recommend trying this restaurant. The atmosphere, service and food are all very good.
