A beautiful church that is well worth the visit. The architecture is beautiful and the history of the Cathedral is awesome. The inside is ornate with beautiful carvings and an ornate ceiling. The outside spire is beautiful and the stained glass windows are gorgeous. Definitely a great place to visit for the beautiful architecture and significance of the cathedral.
While we were in port at St John in Sept (2104) my wife and I made a point of visiting the Cathedral. I did this more for my wife, who is Catholic, but I have to admit I was very impressed by the beauty and the size of the Cathedral. We had a personal tour, which let us know that most of the Cathedral was built by donated immigrant labor between 1853 and 1855. There are some beautiful stained glass windows, along with a very large main chapel and a smaller side chapel. The pipes for the organ are gigantic. If you're into history and architecture (or religion), this is a top choice for a visit.
We were in town on a Saturday and thought we would go to mass at the cathedral. We visited an old cemetery nearby that had graves from the mid 1700's which was very interesting. We missed the tour, but walked through the area. There was a nice view of the downtown from this higher area.
The cathedral is very well-kept. it has high ceilings with statues of many saints in the alcoves up high. We would have liked to have a pamphlet or booklet explaining them. It was nice to attend the mass while on vacation. We enjoy attending local catholic churches whenever we travel. It gives us a feeling of community.
A designated Provincial Heritage Place, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a fine example of "Neo" Gothic architectural style designed by Saint John architect Matthew Stead in 1853. More than 100,000 people visit the Cathedral every year!
As a tour guide, I was amazed when I first learned about the Cathedral's rich history and stunning craftsmanship.
