“Best restaurant in Fredericton, hands down!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

Just discovered this absolute gem of restaurant/cafe and I am so glad I did. Amazing food, service was above and beyond! Lots of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. Meals are cooked fresh, in front of you. The staff were all super friendly & upbeat. Best coffee in the city, and lots of options such as almond & hemp milk and coconut sugar (plus all the regular stuff). Eclectic decor. Highly recommend this place, especially if you are into whole, locally-sourced, organic food.

“Hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

Cafe Loka was great!

Just happened to stop in with a friend and was really happy to see the great options for drinks and food! They even have almond milk!

Reminded me of the kind of cafe you'd find near Kensington Market in Toronto.

“Be prepared to be ignored”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Cafe Loka does have great coffee, but be prepared to pay a steep additional fees if you get it to go, and have LOTS of extra time. This is not a place to simply get a coffee. On more than one occasion I`ve waited 20 minutes to get a coffee. Unfortunately I end up going here anyways because the location is partway between home and downtown. But I am always disappointed in the cost and the wait. Staff seems more interested in talking with their friends than acknowledging and assisting a customer who simply wants a coffee. I am obviously a sucker for punishment.

First of all, we do appreciate our customer’s feedback. It helps us to know what we are doing right and what we can improve on. We want all our customers to walk out with a fantastic cup of coffee in their hand and a smile on their face. We are happy this reviewer enjoys the taste of our coffee, and would like to thank them for the compliment. We are truly sorry they felt ignored and had to wait an excessive amount of time, we wouldn’t be happy either if we had to wait 20 minutes for a coffee. We will strive to do better next time.

We would like to clear up some misconceptions that may have arose if a traveler and potential customer read this review and thought this is how we treat our customers. Café Loka is a family run/owned café. The owners and family are in the café working and serving customers 5 days a week. The owners would not tolerate staff talking with friends rather than serving our customers. We do apologize if this was the case. We have many regular customers we see every day and talk to them like friends because we consider them our friends and treat them like our own family.

Our goal in opening the café was to have a place people could feel at home in a friendly welcoming atmosphere and enjoy a great cup of coffee and healthy fresh meal. So again we apologize if one of our customers slipped our notice and felt ignored, as it is certainly not our intention.

In support of the environment we do charge an extra 25 cents for coffee in a disposable cup. We feel this is a reasonable amount to encourage people to bring in their own reusable mug.

We are a full service café & bistro and not your typical automated mass produced coffee shop. We aim to serve our customers who simply want a coffee immediately when they approach the counter. However during our lunch rush, there may be a short wait as our barista may be attending other customers who have already ordered beverages for dine-in service. We use the “old school” manual espresso machine. All our espresso drinks are hand-crafted and require some effort, skill, and time to make that excellent cup of coffee that we feel you deserve. If a customer is in a rush we are more than happy for them to call us in advance so we can have it ready for when they arrive. Even during the lunch rush our customers generally don’t have to wait more than 5 minutes for us to prepare their espresso beverage. So we do apologize if a customer had to wait 20 minutes for their coffee.

“Wonderful food and thoughtful service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We stumbled upon this for breakfast while traveling through NB. The food was fresh, interesting (fresh-squeezed carrot ginger juice, for instance), and delicious. The staff was exceptionally considerate. The atmosphere is upbeat and the clientele is eccentric. If you're looking for freshly-prepared food in a small cafe environment, this is well worth the side-trip.

“A delicious meal in a trendy environment.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2011

My colleague suggested we have lunch here one warm September day as he preferred to support the local eateries. I was aware of this new locale as it had just been featured in the local Saturday paper, and a great photo of the very attractive owner. I was very surprised by the interior decor of this little bistro. Very modern and inviting with an area for having a relaxing java while you read your favourite magazine or get caught up on your electronic mail. The seating area with tables of 2s & 3s is very intimate and permits personal conversation without being overheard by other patrons. As is typical with venues such as this, a massive menu chalkboard hides the goings on in the open kitchen.
The owner Tammy, introduced herself to us and waited on us hand & foot. The staff is attentive and it’s almost as if you were with family. I noticed that for a recently opened restaurant, they are on a first name basis with many of their customers. Feeling adventurous, I tried the special of the day, Polenta, a dish I had not tried before. The presentation was excellent and the portion more than sufficient, as I tend not to bulk out at noon hour. But today, I made an exception. Following the main course I decided to try one of the pies; local blueberry to be exact! I asked for it “a la mode” & was told they had no ice cream, but would I prefer freshly whipped cream? Yummy! Cappuccinos followed with real demerera sugar!
For the “outdoor” crowd there is a stainless steel table for your morning cup of java or quick bite to eat, while digesting the morning paper. The menu features many homemade products found locally. And their coffee is excellent! They make great espressos only from Fair Trade Capulin coffee beans. So what’s stopping you from a little taste of Italy on York Street?
Café Loka opens at 7:30 am and closes at 4 pm weekdays and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday.
