“On average, not the best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012 via mobile

We have been to this Montana's many times. At best we would give it a 7 on 10. On 'bad night' evenings it would get a 5. Food ranges from adequately prepared to cold and incorrectly prepared. The biggest problem is the manner in which mistakes are handled...often the easiest solution possible which means reheating cold food rather than making fresh. While there are few options in St. Vital, I would recommend going here only if you are prepared for a lackluster meal that feels overly priced.

“Good Time for a Cowboy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012

The western theme is pretty strong and carries right through to the wooded cookhouse benches. Great decor that supports the concept. Not sure that cowboys use crayons and write-on table cloths but it was still fun to see the waitress scribe her name upside down.

Prompt and proficient reception and pretty good table service but maybe I was overly impressed with the upside down writing deal.

Nice beer selection to start. The entire table went with the all-you-can-eat rib special and choose the back ribs instead of the side rib option under the advice of a seasoned Montana’s rib eater and were not disappointed. While not personally a fan of sloppy sauced ribs, these were impressive. Great quality meat that was well cooked and fall-off-the-bone delicious. Lots of napkins were provided which kept the facial disasters to a minimum. Don’t even try to eat neatly as you will be happily disappointed with any attempt to avoid the sauce.

The ribs are all-you-can-eat and come in 5 sauces of which we sampled three. Not sure what the base of the sauce is but it comes through in every option to the point that little difference could be determined. Fortunately, the meat quality dominates each selection and the sauce choice is completely secondary to the meat on the sticks.

The slabs are not cut up before serving so there is a bit of fun hacking through a pile of meat and bones to get the right portions and this adds to the hilarious messiness of the experience.

The re-orders are prompt but make sure you put in your next order before finishing off the tail end of what’s on your plate and the time gap can give you time to realize that you have already eaten more ribs than at any point in your life just because they are that good.

Ignore everything that is going on in the place including the poor birthday folk who have to wear the moose hat while the entire joint sings some kind of Montana’s Birthday Hoedown tune, forget about the wooden seats and brown paper table covering, tune out the stuffed deer heads and canoes, and just put your face into the excellent pig on sticks that will keep sliding under your nose until you finally toss in the white napkin in happy surrender.

“Nice atmosphere, food was OK, but not great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2012

We went there with the family to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The food seemed quite expensive and didn't really wow me. It was good food, but not great. I compare Montana's to a place like Texas Roadhouse (in Fargo), and the food is half the price at Texas Roadhouse, there is more food at T.R., and you get complimentary peanuts and sweet rolls at T.R.

“Bad service with even worse food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2011

I understand that it can be challenging to serve large parties (we were a party of 12), but we gave them two day's notice and they still dropped the ball.

The service was a confused mess. Problems include forgotten orders, food arriving cold or after everybody else had already finished, food arriving that belonged to other diner's tables, bringing things that weren't ordered, etc. I don't want to harp on every tiny issue, sufficed to say that everything that could be screwed up was screwed up. The service gets a score of 1/5.

The cooking staff also gets low marks. Without detailing every problem, just about every dish ordered was messed up in some way. Cold steak, burned fries, dry burgers, un-cooked cheese, overcooked ribs, etc. Think of all the things a kitchen can do wrong, and they did just about all of them wrong.

What bothered me more than everything being screwed up despite us giving them 2 day's notice, was that my father wrote the manager a kindly-worded letter describing the problems, and they just ignored it and never wrote back or called.

That's it for me. I'm never going back to that place again, and neither is any of the 12 people in our party.

Huge fail.
