“Reliable standby”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

I don't usually write reviews for establishments in the city where I live because of obvious biases that come with familiarity. But Delicious Vegetarian merits some comments. There are less than a handful of dining venues in Winnipeg that are strictly vegetarian. Delicious would probably be one of the best. It is a small place (estimated capacity of 30-35) located on Pembina Highway. Street parking in front of the restaurant is allowed except for afternoon rush hour. Additional residential street parking is available a short walk away. Interiors are done in a tasteful mint-green theme, and lighting is muted but adequate. We have been dining here a few times a year for several years, and address the middle-aged lady server as "Auntie". On busy evenings, there may be an additional server who is usually a university student. The cook who is also the owner is named Terry, but we've never seen him outside the kitchen. We've tried quite a number of their dishes including the excellent mock duck. Our favorites are --- hot and sour soup which is distinctive because of a barely perceptible sweetness to it; eggplant which comes with a thick, almost chunky sauce; and peanut tofu, a delectable choice that's guaranteed to please anyone who enjoys peanut butter. A good meal (depending on the drink you order) should cost on the average $15 - $20 per person. Auntie is very helpful and friendly, and she has a regular following of loyal customers. She has a peculiarity, though --- she wraps up your leftovers together in one styrofoam container. I don't mind this, but if you want your viands separately for next day's meal, ask her to pack them in individual containers. Reservations are not required which is not surprising given the rarity of vegetarians in carnivorous Winnipeg. But this restaurant's food quality leads you to believe that you can actually survive without meat --- until you wake up next morning and start dreaming about seared ahi tuna or dry garlic ribs.

I've visited this restaurant a number of times. The first time I really enjoyed it but the last time I was there the food seemed cold and gooey. This may have been because we ordered meat substitutes made of compressed veggie proteins and seitan. The sauces were thick and pasty and lacked flavour.

I will stick to the veggie dishes - can't go wrong with stir fries.

“Absolutely incredible food. Great service. Decent prices.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2011

When you hear all the rumors of how good the food is at this place is, they don't even begin to prepare you for the phenomenal flavors that await you.

Whether you try their delectable vegetarian chicken in black been sauce, the succulent vegetarian gingered beef, their highly addictive signature deep fried mushrooms in spicy salt, their many fabulous soups, or their many delicious rice and chow mein dishes, you have only just begun explore the many treasures that await you at this restaurant. With (from what I remember) over 80 different mouth watering selections there is sure to be something to please anyone. Even Staunch meat eaters that scoff at going to vegetarian restaurant, are always brought to their knees after trying one of their delicious, incredibly meat like, faux-meat dishes.

Their portions are big and their prices reasonable. They prices are way cheaper then most gourmet Chinese restaurants and the food is just as superb and in most cases even better. They are also a licensed establishment serving wine and beer.

The place is very cozy and quaint. It great place to take a date, whether you want romance or just a casual dining experience. The service is also very prompt and friendly and they often check back to see how you are enjoying things. However, this place isn't overly huge so you may want to make reservations for peek times; especially for Friday or Saturday evenings.

The only complaint I have is that the place only takes cash and VISA. They do not take debit and the do not take Mastercard. That is kind of inconvenient if you don't have VISA and don't want to carry cash around. However it is a small price to pay for enjoying the most "delicious" food in winnipeg.

This place really does live up to it's name.

“Not authentic, too greasy, very small”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2008

Delicious Vegetarian restaurant is a vegan chinese restaurant that needs a lot of work. Some dishes, like the eggplant dishes and hot and sour soup, are quite good. However, the food is way too saucy and too deep fried. This is not authentic chinese food. It has curry and a number of non-chinese dishes on the menu.

The restaurant is small with a seating of maybe 25. Reservation recommended. Phone before going to confirm hours. Not open on Monday's.
