“Comfortable place to stay in the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

We stayed two nights and enjoyed our beautiful room with private bath in the old historic house. Diane was helpful in guiding us to attractions we were interested in exploring. The trip to Gimli was a high point of our month long vacation. The breakfasts were delicious. We enjoyed walking to shops and restaurants in the neighborhood.

We are regulars at Banner B and B and would not hesitate to recommend it to any wishing a clean and comfortable stay while in Winnipeg! The house is beautiful and grand as is the hostess/ owner Diane. It is situated in beautiful Crecentwood within walking distance to great shops and resturants. Diane has thought of every need and detail in advance making your stay worry free. Breakfast is always a treat and sets us up for the day. Coffee and tea are provided in the room. We always leave our stay looking forward to the next.

As the others noted, if you are looking for value, then Banner B&B might be a good choice for you. However, there were issues that we have decided would be worthwhile to pay a little more. We stayed there for 5 nights in August of 2011. We opted for the larger bedroom with the private bath. The room itself was clean enough, but the whole house is in need of repair and, well.. it's just looking rather "tired." I'm sure it's very expensive to keep up and Diane has her hands full trying to do that. Also as noted by the other reviewers, the stairs to the guest rooms are quite steep. The floors are creaky, so if you have to get up in the night, you worry about waking others. That big front room faces the street. A very BUSY street with a stop light right at the corner, so it was noisier than we anticipated, as the photos imply that it is in a very quiet residential neighborhood. It is, but that a very busy surface street. Diane does cook up a nice breakfast, but she only serves one item. She thinks up an item and asks the guests one day if that item sounds good for the next day. So, if you arrive during the day, you have no say in what you'll be served the next morning. If you don't like what she serves, what remains isn't much. She would probably get you a bowl of cereal if you asked, but nothing like that is set out for you to choose, etc. So, you sort of feel obligated to eat what is served. Guests all sit at one table in the dining room, so if you want to eat alone, reading the paper, etc. forget it. But our biggest complaint was the lack of security. The lock, if you can call it that, on the bedroom door was a joke. So we most certainly did not feel comfortable leaving our belongings in the room when we left for day outings. Not that we didn't trust Diane, but we certainly didn't know who else was in the house. We had to run the A/C day and night, but it wasn't very effective. She said we wouldn't need it at night, but we did - if for nothing else, to drown out the street noise, but that upstairs bedroom was hot as well. We will not stay there again.

Room Tip: If you don't mind sharing the bath, then the other bedrooms don't face the street, so they m...

Really good value for Winnipeg. Lovely old house. Very big bedroom with huge closet and bath robes. Diane phoned me in England for payment and made our stay so easy. She was so kind and helped us find a doctor as my husband was ill, she also catered for breakfast considering all my food allergies.
I only gave a rating of four as the bedroom was in need of TLC, the paper was torn, and being an old house the wooden floor was extremely creaky. If you can put up with this minor discomfort this is a lovely place to stay.

We had 2 different visitors at two different times come to visit us in Winnipeg. Since we don't have a spare bed they stayed at the Banner Bed and Breakfast. Both families liked the bed and breakfast. They told me that the rooms were clean and the breakfasts were good. The price was excellent. One couple paid $70 with no tax and the other paid $90 with no tax. The difference was that with the $90 you have your own bathroom and the $70 you have to share a bathroom. I visited the rooms and they were both big and very nice. The bedrooms are upstairs so if you can not climb stairs this place isn't for you. If you can the price is very good compared to hotels. Hotels were more expensive plus you had to pay tax. Banner Bed and Breakfast has the taxes included in the price so $90/ night is only $90 not plus tax. Both families said that they would stay here again and I would recommend this place to any of my friends.

Two people, central Winnipeg, hot breakfast for 2, for $70 (all inclusive, no addtl taxes) a night? Unbelievable - but true at Banner Bed and Breakfast.

Rooms are spotless; large, roomy closet;, and the host, Diane Gourluck has put in some nice touches- including ultra comfy bathrobes and coffe/coffeemaker tea kettle and tea. Delicious breakfasts - I only wish we could have stayed longer to try them all.

Upon ADVANCED request, Diane will cook a hot breakfast from one of the menu choices on the BBCanada website. The frittatta was amazing. She is very patient and accomodating to specific requests (e.g. earlier breakfast).

The room we stayed in was a shared bathroom; but there is a HUGE room with a private bath for $95 a night.

A shared bathroom means one must be very courteous and considerate of other guests, and that one clean up immaculately after bathroom use. Not a problem for us - but may be for others.

Breakfast is served at 8:30, but if you need an earlier time, Diane will accommodate you.

The key here is ADVANCE notice. DO NOT spring instant surprises on Diane that will knock her schedule off-kilter. As long as you let her know AHEAD OF TIME that you will need a later check-in, later check out, the bathroom at a certain time (outside the morning rush) - NO PROBLEM! Diane will even try to accommodate your preferred breakfast food, as she did with us, - again WITH ADVANCE notice.

This is actually common courtesy and common sense, as Diane is a one woman show who is always catering to her guests.

The house is a beautiful, Victorian style, centrally located. There are a lot of steps, and a steep staircase to the bedrooms, so these rooms are not wheelchair accessible.

I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. Winnipeg motels and hotels are mediocre that do not give great value for the money. Banner Bed and Breakfast is beautiful AND great value!

Room Tip: Check the BBCanada website, but the pictures don't do the rooms justice!
